Black Lion Luxuries May Cigar of the Month Club Offerings

I know it’s the end of June, but I’ve just gotten around to smoking my way through the May Black Lion Luxuries Cigar Of the Month Club Package. This pack featured three cigars that I hadn’t had a chance to smoke before, and had wanted to, and the other two were cigars I smoked before and liked, so it was a winner all the way around. There was also a trend toward connoisseur type sizes, as there was a lancero and three Corona Gorda sized cigars in the mix. Once again, the value can’t be argued, this was basically “buy 3, get 2 free” or better as the MSRP on the cigars individually added up to $54.86, and the COTM is something like $38 delivered. I’ve been impressed with the packaging and the condition of the cigars, they have been ready to smoke out of the package every time, even when I’ve ignored them for a month! I don’t know if it was intentional or not, but the way the cigars were placed in the bag resembled a left hand.

Being slightly CDO (that’s OCD in alphabetical order, LIKE IT SHOULD BE!), I  smoked the lancero first because it stood out. Luciano the Dreamer is from Ace Prime cigars, which is a newer company that I’ve had absolutely no interaction with at all. They’ve come on the scene in the past few years, and it’s been a few years since I’ve been to an IPCPR show, so I’ve only been hearing about them through other outlets. I don’t even think they were working closely with Crowned Heads when I talked to Miguel Schoedel last year at the TPE show. My point is that I don’t know a lot about this line and I haven’t had any opportunity to sample any cigars from them. I think the closest I’ve come is the Juarez which is made in the same factory, and maybe the Mil Dias? The Dreamer is a 7½” x 38 Lancero, which is just about right for a traditional Laguito No. 1. I appreciate the attention to detail. This is a spectacular example of a lancero in my opinion. When smoked gently, it had flavors of sweet earth and leather. It could not have had a more perfect burn and draw, it was an absolute pleasure to smoke. The makeup of the cigar are an Ecuador Habano Corojo wrapper, Nicaraguan Binder and Nicaraguan and Peruvian fillers, and I always appreciate a little Peruvian in a blend, there’s a little unique spice that it gives. This cigar is a winner.

The next cigar I smoked was the Montecristo 1935 Anniversary Nicaragua Demi.  This was the first of the three Corona Gorda-ish sized cigars, and another one that was new to me and was on my list of cigars I was looking forward to trying. I’ve heard how amazing this cigar was from a lot of people. This is made by AJ Fernandez and is a Nicaraguan Puro and is 5½” x 46. I may need to try this in a larger vitola,  because all I really got from this cigar was pepper, there wasn’t really much else to it. I was expecting a lot more flavor. That’s not to say it was a bad cigar, it’s just that my expectation was set pretty high, and for a $10 cigar I think there should be more than just one peppery note. Might just be me, never claimed to have a good palate, but for me this one was a let down. In my defense, those who follow me and keep score know that many Altadis products appeal to me, however the ones that do tend to be made by AJ Fernandez. I do keep trying though.

Two that I have smoked before, and enjoyed, are the Highclere Castle from Foundation Cigars and the CAO Zocalo Robusto. The Highclere Castle was the Victorian, with is the Habano wrapped line, and a very good smoke. I’m actually not sure if I’ve smoked the Connecticut wrapped Edwardian, yet, although I know I have one around someplace. I do like the Victorian a great deal, it’s a delicious cigar, and this was the “corona”, which is a 5½” x 46. The CAO is the 5″ x 52 Robusto, which is fairly new, it’s a line extension to the Zocalo line which was originally only a 6″ x 60. It’s a nice San Andrés wrapped cigar with some Spice and cocoa. If you enjoy that genré of cigar, as I do, you’ll find the Zocalo to your liking. Once again, both where in perfect condition and ready to smoke.

Finally, I smoked the HVC Serie A Perlas, a true Corona Gorda at 5 5/8″ x 46. This cigar has a Corojo 99 wrapper, and Nicaraguan binder and fillers, and I believe it’s made at the Aganorsa factory. Can I just say that it makes me a little nuts when cigar companies don’t have websites to link to? Can I also say that I seem to be the only cigar blogger who links to the cigar makers websites? I do it because I figure it makes it easy for the reader to get more information about the brands if they feel so inclined and I’m there already half the time and it only takes a second to copy and paste. Anyway, I found this Serie A to have nice, bright flavors, with some sweet spices. It wasn’t a heavy cigar, and I liked it. It was different than the others in the selection and I appreciated that. The COTMs from Black Lion Luxuries have proven to provide not only a good value, but an excellent variety. I recommend them heartily.

Thursday evening I stopped by the Wooden Indian for their first in person event since March of 2020, which featured Pedro Gomez of Drew Estate. It was well attended all things considered, and they raised some cash for Cigars for Warriors, like they always do. It was a good time, and I smoked an Undercrown 10 Corona Doble which was pretty darned good, although I think I’m preferring the Toro so far (big surprise there). It was nice seeing people at an event again and talking to people face to face.

That’s all for today, until the next time,

Black Lion Luxuries Cigar of the Month Club for April

Greetings from the coldest and rainiest Memorial Day weekend in my memory, perhaps in anyone’s in my area! I wanted to re-enclose my porch yesterday and get the propane heater out again, it was that uncomfortable. I suppose we can be a little uncomfortable as we remember what this holiday is about. I recently read something that brings the times we are living in into perspective. As people lament the “tragedy” of their high school seniors missing out due to the pandemic, look back 50 years and consider that many highschool “boys” were heading to Vietnam many never to return, and those who did return weren’t received well. Something to think about as we “celebrate” this weekend. On a lighter note, I am still catching up on the Black Lion Luxuries Cigar of the Month Club offerings. This week I smoked through the April pack. Once again, Ron and James have done a great job of selecting four nice cigars at a great value. Once again, I’m not going to give a paragraph to each cigar, but I am going to hit some highlights!

Since I had been heavy on La Flor Domincana already this week, it seemed only right to lead with the LFD 1994 Rumba. Honestly, this may be one of my favorites in the LFD range. I love the 6½” x 52 size, and the San Andrés wrapper over the La Canela DR fillers and binder make for a really nice smoke. It’s got great flavor but isn’t so strong as to be bothersome. This was the only cigar in the pack with which I had any prior experience. I’m sure nobody remembers, but my final post of the year listed my top ten cigars I hadn’t smoked last year. The Plasencia Alma Fuerte Sixto II marks the third one I’ve managed to tick off the list so far. This is an amazing cigar, so much so that I am actually tempted to go ahead spend the $21 on another one or two to smoke it again. Let’s forget the kitsch of the hexagonal press, which is pretty cool, that’s not what I like about it, nor does the 60 ring gauge impress me, although it doesn’t bother me in the least. This is just a damned delicious cigar. Let’s do a quick look at the financial impact: the COTM is $30 (+ shipping), the LFD is a $9 cigar and the Sixto is $21, and there are still two $8+ cigars left. see where I’m going here?

I smoked the last two cigars yesterday, like I said, the weather is atypical for the end of May. It was rainy and in the 40s. I was bundled on my screen porch with the La Galera Connecticut Tubo listening to some Podcasts. I find my friend Kaplowitz to be entertaining. I honestly can’t remember if I’ve smoked anything from La Galera before, I know I haven’t smoked the Connecticut, maybe I’ve smoked something but I don’t think so, which is actually pretty unusual. I just don’t know where I would have gotten one. This is one of the values of a COTMC such as this, the ability to not only try cigars that you don’t have access to, but also ones you might not pick out on your own. Like the Sixto, I am hard pressed to pry my wallet open that far for a cigar myself, and in the case of this La Galera, I don’t generally buy Connecticuts for myself. But, I do smoke  them when presented with the opportunity, and this was a good one! It has flavor and body and it was well made. If I had one nit to pick it would be that when I took the band off it lifted a large piece of wrapper off with it, but that was a small annoyance, and it I listened to Zino Davidoff (who is, no doubt, rolling in his grave over the treatment done to the brand with his first name on it), I would have been done with the cigar prior to reaching that point.  Good cigar. Finally, another cigar that I hadn’t tried before, the Warped Corto, a 4½” x 46 cigar that was ideal considering the weather conditions. Had it been a warm evening I would have wanted something longer, but this worked out well. This cigar is made at the TABSA (Aganorsa) factory, and is a hot little number. It starts with a blast of pepper and is rich and satisfying. I’m quite happy I had a chance to try this little guy. The only Warped cigar I’ve smoked is the Guardian of the Farm, once again, this isn’t a brand I regularly see around here. The April pack, like March’s, was excellent!

Please take a moment to check out two new advertising partners on the right side, Blackbird Cigar Co. and Ortega Cigar Co. My advertising policy has always been to only display ads for companies whose products I like, and for people I like, and these two are no different. Heck, I’ve known Eddie Ortega for ten years I think! Point is, if you see the link on my page, you can trust the company as I do, they carry my seal of approval!  Anyway, my gratitude to those who’ve served, and those who’ve lost in service to their country. Until the next time,

Black Lion Luxuries Cigar of the Month Club for March

First off, I noticed that my e-mail notifications suddenly started working again, something that’s been screwed up since I updated my site to SSL. I still have some work to do with my host, I think, I just need to get on the phone with them and fight, the people I’ve talked to don’t seem to know what an RSS feed is, and it’s a little important in the blogging business. I will need to find a new e-mail service in the near future anyway and I need to have the RSS stuff working right. Enough of the technical details that you don’t care about, let’s talk about some cigars.  I’ve recently been re-introduced to the Cigar of the Month Club business model, and the folks at Black Lion Luxuries shared theirs with me and I wanted to tell you all about my experience. First, I’m a little behind, so I opened the March pack, which included five cigars. I’m led to believe that the reasonable expectation is four cigars, and for $30 ($about $38 delivered, depending on where you live), that’s a pretty darned good value for the cigars I’m seeing in these packs. I went through the pack this week, and let me tell a little about them.

I’m not going to do a paragraph on each cigar, I smoked them at my leisure, for my own enjoyment, concentrating on the overall experience of the cigars as delivered by the vendor if that makes sense. I do have to some comments though. Regarding the Eiroa cigars: I’ve actually known Christian Eiroa for a long time, we go back to the Usenet days like Saka, and I know him personally, but he’s never, in 20 years, handed me a cigar. I’ve bought a bunch of his cigars, I used to love Camachos, but I haven’t loved the CLEs I’ve bought for some reason. These two Eiroa First 20 Years are a different story, with a nod going to the 646, which was truly exceptional. I haven’t had a cigar this good from Christian Eiroa ever. I believe Will Cooper gave the 550 a number one cigar of the year a few years ago, and I can’t find fault with that assessment. There have been times I’ve spent $30 on 2 cigars and not enjoyed them as much as these two, and there were three more really good cigars left in the pack!

OK, one more paragraph. I happened to work out that Mel Shah of MBombay cigars had a birthday this week, so I smoked the MBombay Classic Torpedo in his honor. I’ve lost touch with Mel, and I’m not sure what’s going on with the brand, but they are really good cigars. This is another cigar which which I have some history, first, the factory that makes these makes Vegas de Santiago in Costa Rica, and that name probably doesn’t mean much to most people, but it’s a brand that I’ve smoked a bunch of years ago. It’s also the same factory that makes the Byron and Atabey cigars. It’s a delicious Connecticut Shade cigar that deserves a try, it’s one I’ll gravitate towards if I crave a shade. If the Eiroa 646 wasn’t the best cigar in the bunch, the Todos Las Dias was. I’ll admit it took me a few cigars to warm up to this blend, but it’s delicious, and my favorite size, the 6″ x 52 toro too. Finally, the Punch Rare Corojo Pita, another Toro, which is the only sub-$10 cigar in the pack, and a really tasty smoke in my opinion. I’ve always liked the Rare Corojo, despite it not being Corojo, and hardly being rare.

I have to say, pick any three cigars in the Black Lion Luxuries Cigar of the Month pack, and you’ve got your money’s worth, the other two are gravy. All of the cigars smoked perfectly, and arrived in pristine condition. I realize they are only making a short trip from Harrisburg, PA to my home in suburban Philadelphia, but with today’s USPS, that potentially could be a long trip! These five cigars made for a great week of smoking for me, first impressions are extremely good for Black Lion Luxuries Cigars, and they seem to have other good deals on the website as well! I look forward to getting into the April selection! By the way, Check out RonRealTV, Ron helps in the selection of the Cigar of the Month Club cigars, and has a popular YouTube Channel! Thank you to Black Lion Luxuries Cigars for sharing their CIgar of the Month Club with me.

That’s all for today, until the next time,
