Revisiting the Colibri V Cut Cigar Cutter

Since I’ve been busy working, and managed to catch a cold and haven’t had a cigar since Friday, I figured I’d follow up on the Colibri V-Cut Cutter I reviewed last April. You may or may not recall (if you don’t, you can go back and read my initial thoughts here), I first became acquainted with the V-cut in the mid-90s when I’d buy a cigar at my local shop and cut it with their Boston Cutter on the counter. Those were the days when I’d buy a cigar and smoke it rather than worry about storing cigars in humidors at home, or having tools of my own. A simpler time. Anyway, I’ve been using the Colibri V-Cut for probably 90% of my cuts over the last 9 months or so, the exceptions being those times when I’m out and about and don’t want to be weighed down by the heaviness of the cutter, which I still find to be my least favorite aspect of the tool, and when I’m smoking an odd shape that I feel will work better with a straight cut or a punch. There’s one other funny exception, and I don’t do this all the time, but every now and then when I smoke something from Dunbarton Tobacco and Trust I’ll give it a straight cut, because I know Saka has said he doesn’t get the deep V cut trend, and for some reason, in deference to him, I smoke his cigars the way he intends them to be smoked (but sometimes I V cut them just to be an ass). I guess the point here is after cutting probably 250+ cigars with this cutter, it still cuts like the day it came out of the box, I can’t recall one cigar I’ve had to re-cut because the draw wasn’t right, and it looks like new.  Of course, it hasn’t been in my pocket every day, because it’s not my habit to carry any cigar tool in my pocket every day. It hasn’t suffered the wear of keys and change and whatever other pocket stuff rubbing against it every day does to it. I still dig it, the other V-cutters I have sit in a drawer unused, and this is a near-everyday tool for me. My only wish is that it were lighter in the pocket, but that would compromise the quality and usability, so I guess finding that Batman utility belt is the way to go.

Thank you to Colibri for sending me this cutter to use last year, I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase one, as they are very reasonably priced.

    Craig,
You’re spot-on about this cutter. I’ve been using one for a few months now, and it’s become my go-to for a perfect draw. It is heavy – it’s a quarter-pounder! – and built like a tank. Nice clean cut every time, and works wonders on those torpedoes that always seem a bit too snug. The depth of the cut makes me hesitant to use it on a smaller cigar, though.
I also put up a review of it on Casas Fumando: http://www.casasfumando.com/accessory-review-colibri-v-cut/
    Great post, and get well!

I have been using this cutter since it came out. I have a few that I keep in various places but they still cut like the day they were bought. I use this probably 95% of the time to cut my sticks and it never disappoints. I have also tried the new Xigar V-cut but it seems a bit hard to hold and the open and close are not as fluent as the Colibri. I highly suggest this cutter.

        Michael,
The longevity of the sharpness of the blade was my one concern, but from what you and Craig have said, it appears that it’s not a problem. Thanks for the feedback!

Nothing particularly wrong with this cutter, but I was annoyed when I went into a cigar shop — having left my cutter somewhere else (I forget) — looking to buy a simple, cheap cutter, and the V was all they had in the < $20 range.

Again, a perfectly fine cutter, for those days when you want a V cut, but this particular day wasn't one of those days.

So now I'm vaguely annoyed at them for no legitimate reason and, even though I recognize that my brain is being totally silly about the whole thing, it remains stubbornly steadfast.

    @#$% cigar cutters! 😉

      Ted,
You should be glad to have this. The retail price on this cutter is $40-$50, depending on finish, so you got a bargain! I understand that the V-cut is not everyone’s preference, and it wasn’t mine initially, but I’ve really come around to it. Great draw every time.

I have a very good friend from Ohio who visits south Florida every year for a month. I had been a straight cut man for 35 years. Two years ago her, her husband, and another friend and I were shop hopping and I didn’t have a cutter. She offered up her Colibri V cutter,it was pink,🤣. I was so impressed with that cutter that I bought one that day, mines blue and black.
I use it everyday for 90% of my cuts. Only small ring gauges and weird shapes get the straight cut. It works the same today that it did brand new, and I’m hard on everything I own.
Craig I think this portable V cutter has to be that heavy to do it’s job day in and out. The design in my eyes is genius. I’ll heft the weight to get that clean V with the always perfect draw.
Keep up the entertainment, I look forward to your posts.
