Some Alec Bradley, Panacea, Stolen Throne and CAO Cigars

I didn’t do anything as interesting this week as I have the last few weeks! I have been working on the daunting task of putting my Secret Santa package together, I hope everyone who participated is having an easier time.  If I recall, I got stiffed last year, so the person who had me wasn’t invited back. If anyone was going to get the short end, I prefer it’s me anyway.  It’s nice getting goodies, but I prefer the giving part.  If only buying my wife gifts was as easy as sending cigars!  Anyway, I managed to get some new-to-me cigars in this week, more or less.  Starting out with a new release from Forged and Alec Bradley Cigars, the Do Not Disturb.  The press release explains the name: “Alec Bradley’s latest offering encourages cigar lovers to press pause, unwind and let the world wait.”  Honestly, that’s pretty much every cigar for me.  Anyway, this cigar comes out of Tabacalera La Isla, which makes other cigars I like, so I was looking forward to trying this. It’s a Ecuador Connecticut shade cigar, which doesn’t really excite me, with a Dominican Criollo binder (not a big criollo fan), and Dominican and Mexican fillers.  My first thought was along the lines of “gee, another shade cigar”, but I smoked it and it was very nice. My notes say sweet cream with a hint of bitterness, which. doesn’t really sound as good as it was. This held up well as an end of the day smoke, but would be really nice in the morning with coffee (in the summer).  I was pleasantly surprised by this one.

 

Next up was the Twisted Hitch from Panacea/Flatbed Cigar Co..  Of course, Panacea is an advertising partner here, and I probably use all of the ad revenue to buy Panacea cigars. There’s always a discount code (CCFS25 for 25% off and Free Shipping on your First Order) and there’s a widget on the left sidebar with daily specials.  There’s some great cigars at good prices there every day. I encourage people to try this Dominican brand that’s been around for a long time.  Anyway, I saw that the Twisted Hitch was recently released, so I picked up a 4 pack.  This is a 6½” x 55 Toro Grande with a Brazilian Maduro wrapper, Dominican binder and Dominican and Nicaraguan filers.  This is a fairly full bodied cigar with an interesting light spice, nuts and maybe a little dark dried fruits.  I think it’s got some similarities to the White Label. Looking forward to smoking more of these. 

 

I smoked the Stolen Throne Castle 919 in the belicoso vitola a while back and was enamoured with it. I had picked up a robusto at the same time and lit it up yesterday. I needed a sweet treat after a hefty lunch, and this was it.  This has an Ecuadorian Habano Claro wrapper,  with a Nicaraguan binder with Nicaraguan & Dominican/Peruvian fillers.  The robusto is 5″ x 50.  I didn’t get much of a difference in flavor between this and the belicoso, maybe it was a little shorter smoke.  I get white sugar on this, it’s a flavor I enjoy in a cigar, and I really enjoyed this one.  I’d pick up more, but my local shop has been low on Stolen Throne, and I haven’t been out to the Wooden Indian recently, it looks like they have them in stock. Personally, I’d pay the 50¢ more for the slightly larger belicoso, but that’s me.  You aren’t going to go wrong either way, just like it’s hard to go wrong with Stolen Throne cigars (I don’t like the Yorktown, apparently some people do). Oddly, this isn’t on their website yet. 

 

I have had some mixed results with the CAO Arcana line. I really liked the Mortal Coil and Thundersmoke, but thought the Firewalker was an abomination.  The Stokk is an interesting addition to this line.  It uses some Adullo, Cyprian Latakia, some Honduran fillers , A nicaraguan binder all wrapped in US Broadleaf.  It’s only available in an 6½” x 52 Belicoso, where as the rest of the Arcanas are Toros.  I think it’s called Stokk because of the collaboration with pipe maker Stokkebye, I doubt it’s a coincidence. The Latakia is mostly used in pipe tobacco. This pipe tobacco thing in cigars is becoming a little over done.  There is the Deadwood line, Stillwell Star, Outcast, now this. Does anyone remember Sam Leccia’s Bumpy Root? That might have been the first.  Anyway, the second one of these I smoked was way better than the first, moving it ahead of the Firewalker in my rankings.  While note my favorite in the range, it has some interesting flavors in the beginning, transitioning to some nice, sweet tobaccos in the end.

A Couple Wooden Indian Exclusives and a Stolen Throne Cigar

This week I’m featuring some exclusive cigars that aren’t widely available.  The first two are available via Wooden Indian‘s website, or in the store, and this post is only sponsored by the store in so much as they provided me with samples. I have a history with the Wooden Indian going back to my first visit in 2009 in their old location, where I met Marvin Samel at an event and smoked my first Liga Privada No.9. This is interesting, because the store would become the first  (of only 2) Liga Privada lounge and has a long standing history with Drew Estate. They have their own Serie Unico cigar, the Pancetta, which I wrote about here. Anyway, this year marks the 20th anniversary of Dave Mayer owning the store, which celebrated 60 years in business last year.  Dave is one of my favorite people in the cigar industry. I’ll start with the Perdomo Dave’s 20th Anniversary cigar.  Not a lot of folks get a Perdomo exclusive, so this is really special.  They made 200 boxes of ten of this 6″ x 54 belicoso, which has an Ecuador shade wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and fillers, and is said to be a never before available blend.  I’ve heard that this is Arthur Kemper’s personal blend, and apparently the bands were in the same shipment with the Perdomo Lagacy bands, so this has been in the pipeline for a while.  I’ve never been enamored with Perdomo’s shade offerings, but this one was something different.  It’s not a mild cigar, which is consistent with Perdomo’s shade cigars, but it has some sweet, nutty tobacco flavors that I enjoyed.  This is a very good cigar, If you’re a Perdomo fan, or a Dave Mayer fan, you have to try this one!

 

Last year the Wooden Indian celebrated 60 years in business, and they had the Aganorsa Leaf Supreme leaf WIT 60, a 5″ x 56 Gran Robusto.  This year, for Dave’s 20th, they have the Aganorsa Leaf Supreme Leaf Gran Robusto, a vitola that’s exclusive to the Wooden Indian.  I honestly don’t know if this is the same as the WIT 60, the vitola is the same, but I don’t recall the previous iteration being as strong as this one.  It’s a Nicaraguan puro, with a Nicaraguan Corojo ’99 wrapper.  The first draw was pure twang, I noted that this must have a high nicotine level.  It settled a little,  but not much, over the course of it’s five inches, but maintained it’s power.  This is a strong cigar with a heavy citrus spice.  It was satisfying, but I rather prefer the smoothness of the La Validación Series.  Supreme Leaf is seasonally released, always in a different size, but this 5″ x 56 is only available at the Wooden Indian.  I’ll very likely revisit this after some humidor time. 

 

At some point yesterday I thought it would be a good idea to smoke a Pancetta to complete the Wooden Indian trifecta, but after spending the afternoon with family, then going to a pre-season Flyers game, by the time I got home I had forgotten.  I had been looking forward to smoking a cigar that Lee Marsh of Stolen Throne Cigars had given me, ironically at the Wooden Indian, and that one was the one I grabbed when I got home.  Lee made this cigar in honor of his late canine companion, Brody.  Brody was a Cane Corso who was very special to Lee and his family.  It’s my assumption that this is the Argos blend, which was a Winston’s Humidor (in Virginia) exclusive.  Of course, the handsome dog on the band barked “smoke me” last night. This is a 5″ x 54 belicoso, made at the Rojas factory in Nicaragua, with a Sumatra wrapper and Nicaraguan fillers.  Stolen Throne has two other cigars in the portfolio with Sumatra wrappers, neither of which I’m fond of, and he never lets me forget that.  This one was somehow different, I very much enjoyed it.  It had an interesting slightly fruity, slightly spicy aspect to the rich tobacco flavor.  I was concerned, based on my experiences with the Yorktown and Call to Arms, but I throughly enjoyed this cigar.  

 

I broke down and upgraded some equipment this week. I’ve been using a 2014 Macbook Air for the last several (7 or 8) years, and bit the bullet and picked up a 2020 Macbook Air.  I think the 2009 iMac may need to be retired. Both of the old Macs were “rescues”, from the short time I worked for an Apple reseller, I got my money’s worth out of them. I can’t see any advantage a 2025 Macbook would give me over this one for what I do for the $400 price difference, but this is still way more than I’ve ever paid for a computer! I suspect this will last me quite a long time.  That’s all I have for today, until the next time,

Stolen Throne 919, Tatuaje Cohete Corojo, Howard G Cigars and the Giveaway Winner!

Here we are, 16 years of writing CigarCraig.com!  After all this time I still have to talk myself into going to a cigar shop after work!  It’s nothing personal, and I always regret it when I pass up an opportunity, but it’s a struggle for me to leave the comfort and safety of my home smoking lounge!  Weird, right?  I’m actually an introvert, but I do my best to hide it.  Anyway, Thursday evening I visited the Wooden Indian where Lee Marsh from Stolen Throne Cigars was doing an event. I consider Lee to be a friend, and it wouldn’t have been right for him to be in the neighborhood and miss seeing him.  I love some of his cigars, add the Castle 919 to that list.  I picked up a couple of the new Castle 919 cigars, a Robusto and a Belicoso, the only two sizes offered.  Castle 919 has an Habano Claro wrapper, over Nicaraguan binder and fillers, made at the Rojas factory. I smoked the Belicoso, which is 5″ x 54 (the Robusto is 5″ x 50), and was delighted.  This has the sugar cane sweetness I enjoy and was really good to the last drop!  This may rise to the top of my Stolen Throne list of favorites, although the Crook of the Crown and Three Kingdoms will always rank highly.  It was a treat to see Micky Pegg there as well and learn that All Saints Cigars is healthy!  It is disappointing that they dropped my favorite size from their lines (Churchill), but glad they are still around!  Lee and I stopped by Cigar Mojo – The Grove afterwards where I smoked a Yorktown Fleet Robusto, which is still not my favorite, but growing on me. Lee is deeply hurt that I don’t care for this blend (or the Call to arms). 

 

Friday was my birthday, my whole family (8 of us) went out to a nice dinner.  It makes me happy having all of us together.  We got home a little late, so it was the perfect time to smoke a 4″ x 50 Tatuaje Cohetes Corojo that I had picked up when I visited Cigar Mojo – The Grove.  I should get over there more often, it’s literally a mile from my house, refer back to the first couple sentences of this post. This is the first Cohetes I’ve smoked in the Tatuaje line, it’s curious to me that it exists along with the 4 3/8″ x 52 T110, they are different blends, but similar sizes.  This was a really good little smoke. It started out with spice, but an interestingly different spice.  Starting with spice is expected, but this was a different flavor.  It sweetened slightly as it smoked, and was a really delicious little smoke, that lasted at least an hour for me.  Looking forward to the T110 Corojo I picked up as well to see how they compare. 

 

Once again, a Smoke Inn special sucked me in, who can pass up $20 for five cigars delivered to your door in a couple days?  This one was two Rocky Patel Cameroons and three Howard G Cameroons.  It’s a no-brainer. While I was interested in trying both, the Howard G cigars were my first priority. I think I met Howard at a trade show, it would have been outside the bar in the Venetian,  but I don’t recall formal introductions.  I’ve been hearing good things, so I wanted to sample the brand, and I like Cameroon, always have.  It looks like this is in the Magic Stick line, which also has a Habano and Connecticut. I notice that they also have a Golf themed line which has a Front Nine and Back Nine. I hope Ryan Gallimore (check out the new Cigar Circus site!) is OK with that, as he had a Front Nine and Back Nine in his Swinger Cigars line many years ago.  I will be on the lookout for the Magic Stick Habano, but this Cameroon wasn’t bad!  It has a raw nuts sort of nuttiness, and I seem to get some kind of nuts flavor from Cameroon.  It was a fairly bold flavor, the cigar smoked very nicely. 

 

OK, now to announce a winner in last Sunday’s big giveaway.  Apparently I guessed right on what the mystery Freestyle Live cigar was. which surprises me more than anyone.  It’s a really good smoke, and I look forward to getting my hands on them when they hit stores.  I consulted Google’s random number generator, and 4 was the number, and the number of the counting was 4.  This corresponds to Jeff W., who needs to email me his contact information so I can get this out. I’m sure I’ll be able to come up with some more stuff for future giveaways!  Thank you all for reading over these last 16 years!

Jaime Garcia, Kristoff and Stolen Throne Cigars

Once again I picked up some new-to-me cigars at various shops.  I can’t quite remember why, but I stopped in to the Cigar Mojo shop nearest to me and came across the Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial Suceser, which I initially misspelled, my mind saw the english version, which is “successor”.  From what I can devine, this comes in two sizes with two different wrapper, which is interesting.  I got the 6″ x 56 Toro with a Sumatra seed wrapper and there’s also a 6 1/8″ x 52 Torpedo which has a Habano seed wrapper.  I have to hunt down a torpedo, I guess. has a hint of the mesquite flavor that the CAO had, not as prominent bu there, along with some sweetness from the Brazilian wrapper.  This was very nice, I’d smoke it again.

 

In another recent shop visit, this time the Wooden Indian, I got a couple of the new Stolen Throne Argos, this one is 6″ x 52 with a pigtail cap and a semi-closed foot.  This is an interesting project with started as an exclusive to Winston’s Humidor in Midlothian, VA, with proceeds going toward animal rescue organizations. I don’t know if this is still the case, but knowing Lee Marsh as I do, I wouldn’t doubt that it is. Lee hates that I love the Three Kingdoms and Crook of the Crown, but am not a fan of the Call to Arms and Yorktown Fleet, the latter of which is growing on me.  I think this Argos falls somewhere in between.  It has a sour note that I find in the Yorktown, perhaps that’s the “roasted oranges” that is mentioned on the website (one roasts oranges?). I also got some leather and some dry baking cocoa sort of flavor. I found it enjoyable, and very much appreciate Dave at the Wooden Indian for hooking me up with these.  I just wish these had bands, maybe whip something up on a laser printer or something? 🙂

Crook of the Crown, Romeo y Julieta, Villiger Limited Release and Silencio Cigars

I had last weeks cold kicked by Monday, but it seems to have come back a bit.  I haven’t had a cold this bad since I quit smoking cigarettes (and had sinus surgery) back in 2007. Anyway, I didn’t have any trouble tasting this week, not that I have the greatest palate anyway, but I know what I like.  I think Lee Marsh of Stolen Throne Cigars is still mad at me because I didn’t really like the Yorktown Fleet (although I admit it’s growing on me, I’m due to pick up another one and try it), but I hope I redeem myself a little here. olen Throne Crook of the Crown 5th Anniversary cigars this week, and had to smoke one right away.  I’ve been a fan of the Crook since the first one I tried, so I was excited to try it in what they are calling a Corona, but I’m not sure on what planet a 6″ x 46 is a corona.  Gran Corona, perhaps, but a corona is 5½” x 42.  It’s too long to be a Corona Gorda.  Whatever it is, I like it.  It has a Pigtail cap, a partially closed foot, with a San Andrés wrapper, Indonesian binder, and Nicaraguan fillers, made at the Rojas factory.  This one has the same Cocoa and spice as its namesake, with a little more focus given the smaller ring.  Burn and draw were perfect, this

was an amazingly good smoke.  

 

Thursday I lit up the Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real Nicaragua Midnight Twist Toro that was handed to me at the Smokeonos event by Charlie Watson of Altadis USA. I don’t have a great track record with Altadis Cigars, many of them just don’t appeal to me.  The exception is those that are made by AJ Fernandez, almost universally.  The Reserva Real Nicaragua line is made by AJ Fernandez, and I like it. I quite enjoyed the regular Reserva Real Nicaragua and really liked this one.  It’s a 6″ x 54 (also comes in the “Love Story” 4½” x 46 perfecto size), with a barber pole wrapper consisting of Nicaraguan Habano & Maduro leaf.  It has the same binder and filler as the Reserva Real Nicaragua, which, you guessed, is Nicaraguan.  I almost liked this more than the Crook of the Crown…almost.  This is a rich and decadent cigar, I got some creamy cocoa and spice.  It was really good and I want more.  To be fair, if it just had a maduro wrapper, and wasn’t presented as a barber pole, I’d probably like it, but obviously they can’t call it Midnight Twist if it doesn’t have the contrasting wrappers.  I believe I enjoyed the Twisted Love Story too.

 

Also at the Smokeonos I spoke with René Castańeda of Villiger Cigars, who handed me this Villiger Limited Release No. 39 Torpedo.  I can’t find any information about this cigar, and my message to René went unanswered.  I will update this post when I get a reply.  My assumption is that it’s made at the Villiger de Nicaragua factory, which I also assume is a subfactory within the Joya de Nicaragua factory.  I also assume that this is a Nicaraguan puro.  I can only find info about a No. 29, and a No 41, no No. 39.  I was really hoping to hear back from René.  One thing I’m not going to assume is that I really liked this cigar, and the fact that I may never find another one is disheartening. I took limited notes as I was enjoying the cigar too much (OK, I always take limited notes).  I liked the Chocolate and spice I got, it was really nice.  The torpedo shape was well made and it had a good burn and draw.  I was quite happy with this cigar, it was a nice way to wrap up the work week.

 

One of my favorite Saturday afternoon activities is sitting in my screen porch and watching TV with a cigar, after all the chores are done.  Yesterday it was “Clarkson’s Farm” season 3, the first three episodes. Jeremy Clarkson is a hoot.  Anyway, I chose one more cigar that I was handed at the Smokeonos, a Silencio toro.  This is a cigar that Sean Williams, Cohiba brand ambassador, uses as his calling card.  Silencio is also the name General Cigars/STG uses on the Cohiba line in Europe, as they can’t use Cohiba there.  The cigar has a Nicaraguan wrapper, a Cameroon binder, and filler tobaccos from Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic.  I found the smoke to be rather drying, which is odd for me.  It seemed leathery with some interesting spices. I felt like this would sit well with a European palate for some reason.  I always like seeing Sean Williams, he’s just about the nicest guy you’ll want to meet, and he’s cooler than the other side of the pillow.  If you see him at an event, maybe he’ll give you one of these.  I enjoyed it, but I like the Cohiba Riviera more!
