Week’s Cigars: Maria Mancini, CAO Brazilia, Etc. – Friday June 18, 2010

It’s been a busy week so not a lot to report I’m afraid. Wednesday I grabbed a Maria Mancini Magic Mountain for a walk to the store. This particular cigar has a little looser draw than I prefer, so I had to smoke it a little slower. It rather amazes me every time I smoke one of these how good a $2 cigar can be. I’ve smoked dozens of Maria Mancinis over the years and have never had a major problem with them. They taste great and generally burn well. As I’ve mentioned before, I have always had some of these in my humidors over the last decade. I imagine these could go for $3 or $4 retail, but you can get 5-packs from JR Cigars for a shade over $10. Even if you order online and have to pay shipping they are still a great deal.

Thursday evening, after having a brief conversation with a friend about his recent CAO buying spree, I was inspired to light up a CAO Brazilia Robusto. There are quite a few CAO cigars I’ve enjoyed over the years, and there’s a few that just don’t do it for me, like the Criollo line. I loved the cameroon wrapped line back when it was called the Anniversario, then later L’Anniversaire, and they were severely box pressed. The corona in particular was like a tongue depresser it was so flat! I had a box of the Tubos in that line which were really nice. Now I guess they are just called Cameroon. Back to the Brazilia. Beautiful dark wrapper. Dense smoke. Good stuff.

As my son and I were walking around the block I introduced myseld to a neighbor who I’d seen smoking a cigar while cutting his grass. He said that he had just returned from the Netherlands and was enjoying a Partagas which he had picked up there. You have to love a guy who smokes Havanas while pushing a lawn mower! Naturally, I mentioned that I had recently received a box of similar Partagas cigars and my son (who is 20 and enjoying the occasional cigar) asked if he could have one. He lit one up after our trip around the block. I warned him that these were a little on the aggressive side, but he enjoyed the experience. His first cigar was a Romey y Julieta Coronitas en Cedro when he was 18 which I had gotten for my daughter’s wedding. Spoiled brat 🙂

Sunday is Father’s day, so I will be dipping into my dwindling stash of Esperanza Para los Niños. These are over 10 years old, so every year I wonder how they’ve aged. I will probably smoke a Churchill, as I still have a few of them. It’ll get difficult when A) I’m down to the last one or two, and B) if I find that they are losing their flavor with age. For some reason the Churchills have had some burn issues for me in the past, so we’ll see how it goes. I think the last one I smoke will be the Toro from the box that I bought in 2000, and it will likely be to celebrate some major kid-related milestone of some sort. We’ll see.

While I’m thinking of it, for those of you who live in Pennsylvania, or purchase cigars from vendors in PA (which I’m willing to bet most have at one time or another), our government is at it again, trying to fill budget gaps with tobacco taxes. Here’s the letter I sent to my representatives, with some help from the IPCPR‘s legislative action center:

I urge you to oppose any new taxes on premium cigars and other premium

tobacco products! Additional taxes will drive business out of state,

drive consumers to purchase out of state, and will result in less revenue.

Business taxes, sales tax, income tax, all will be reduced as a result.

What will be taxed after tobacco to make up that deficit?

Please remember, your tax revenues come from me-and I vote! We do not need

more taxes–not during this recession!

The IPCPR and CRA both have information on how to contact the PA Politicians and I would urge everyone to drop them a note pointing out the folly of thinking a tobacco tax is going to accomplish anything besides driving businesses out of PA. Here’s a press release from the IPCPR: http://www.prweb.com/releases/2010/06/prweb4154864.htm

Joya de Nicaragua Contest Winner Announcement – Sunday June 6, 2010

Well, after working with some really uncooperative cats today, we finally got some winners selected.  First we thought we’d mix it up a bit and dangle the names from strings, but the cats didn’t go for it.  Then we tried the catnip, which just zoned them out more and didn’t get us anywhere. By that time it got to be the time of day that they all disappear to nap the afternoon away.  Sounded good to me, so after a nap and dinner we regrouped and decided to try something radical.  Here’s the video of this month’s contest selection:

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v55gIE8V8OM

The first prize is a 5 pack of Joya de Nicaragua Antaño cigars, which will be finding their way to “DB”, aka @USAF_CC on Twitter.  I gather from his moniker that he’s busy serving our country in our armed forces, so these will go to him with our congrats and thanks!  We appreciate your service.

Duane Holmes is the winner of a Joya de Nicaragua cap and cutter.  Congrats to you and thank you for reading and participating!

Please send me your mailing addresses so that I can get these out to you this week.  Thanks go to Steve Saka and the folks at Drew Estate, who are the distributor of Joya de Nicaragua cigars, for providing these wonderful items for me to give away.

The music in the video is from a friend of ours, Cliff Hillis.    The song is “She Sees” from the album ” The Long Now”, available on http://www.cliffhillis.com .  Cliff is a very talented singer/songwriter who plays around the east coast.  We like to see Cliff whenever we have the opportunity.  He doesn’t smoke cigars, but I don’t hold that against him!  His music was featured on the CW network’s show “Life Unexpected”.

That’s it for now, except that I had a really well aged and delicious H.Upmann Coronas Major on Thursday which was at least 6 years old, probably older.  It was a terrific cigar that was well worth the wait. I had a Maria Mancini Robusto Larga yesterday which, while having a bit too loose a draw, was quite good.

Congrats again to the winners and thanks to everyone for participating!

Weekend Cigars and a Drew Estate Liga Privada Contest! – Sunday May 2, 2010

Saturday evening I selected a CAO Mx2 Rob for my evening walk.  My wife had gotten me a selection of CAO cigars for Valentines day and this was among them.  It was a robusto, and pretty much everything a maduro cigar should be.    The combination of Connecticut broadleaf wrapper and Brazillian maduro binder really overwhelm the palate with  bitter coffee and cocoa.

This afternoon, while pressure washing my in-laws deck, I lit up a Maria Mancini Robusto Larga. This cigar served as an insect repellent as well as an enjoyable smoke.  While not as smooth as those that I’ve had with several years of age, it was still a tasty and well made cigar, which held up well to the rigors of outdoor work. This remains among my favorite cigars at any price and I have always had these in my humidor in one vitola or another.

My 20 year old son and I had exchanged text messages on Friday when he mentioned that he and his friends took a trip to Holt’s (they go to Drexel) and he had purchased and smoked a Liga Privada T52.  He picked this out based on having heard about them from me.  I don’t keep track of what he’s smoking, he started out just after his 18th birthday, with a Romeo y Julieta Coronitos en Cedro at his sister’s wedding.  He said he really loved that cigar, as he was turning seven shades of plaid after smoking it.  When he told me he smoked the T52 I told him that it should have made him vomit, but he said it was amazing.  That’s the word he kept using: “amazing”.  So, it that spirit, I selected a Liga Privada No. 9 for tonight’s smoke.

The Liga Privada No. 9 was blended for the personal use of Steve Saka, president of  Drew Estate. It has a Connecticut broadleaf wrapper and a five tobacco filler blend.  It’s a great cigar, very rich and satisfying.  The burn was as even as they come and it burned for a long time.  Delicious!  It’s no wonder Steve is rarely seen without one of these in his mouth.

Also in that spirit, I’d like to announce this month’s contest.  I have a really good prize for the winner this time.  It’s a five cigar Liga Privada Sampler courtesy of Drew Estate.  Here are the rules:  Leave a comment here with your guess as to what the digital hygrometer in my 48 quart Coleman Coolerdor reads.  I’ll post a photo of it when I announce the winner.  Contest ends Sunday, May 9.  Your guess should include both the temperature and humidity.  Any tie will be broken by cat selection.  I’m tempted to offer a bonus if someone guesses exactly, but the prize itself is pretty fantastic!

So tell your friends, spread the word, subscribe to my e-mails, follow me on twitter…..someone is going to get a nice five pack of Liga Privadas!

Until next time,

CigarCraig

Thursday Cigar Ramblings: Maria Mancini, CAO Italia, Montecristo – April 1, 2010

Monday night, in celebration of re-stocking my Maria Mancini selection, I lit up a Magic Mountain that I’ve had in my humidor for quite a few years. It smoked great, tasted great, and was, over all,  more than I expect from a $2.00 cigar!  There is one more old one left that I may have to smoke back to back with a new one just for kicks. I’ve smoked many, many cigars in this line over the years and the flavor has been remarkably consistent, aged or new. I don’t know if this is good or bad, I just know that I like the cigars!

I’ve been wanting to smoke a Cain F, but I also wanted to smoke something that isn’t receiving a lot of buzz lately and the Cain seems to be talked about quite frequently. So for Wednesday’s cigar I chose a CAO Italia Box Press that I got at the 2008 IPCPR show. These may not be for everyone, but I enjoy the sharp flavors the Italian tobacco adds to the blend from time to time.  This particular example was plagued with burn problems.  The wrapper wouldn’t burn…it was like the original H2000 leaf when it first came out (which, ironically, the Maria Mancini uses, and always burns well).  I had noticed a small tear in the wrapper just above the cap, but I don’t know that that was the whole problem as I was able to cover the tear with my lips. I emptied one lighter trying to keep it burning, and when it finally did get going with about 2 inches to go I probably got a little overzealous with it and ended up curled up on the couch in a fetal position for the rest of the evening.  It’s not often that a cigar gets the best of me, but this one did.  I have a few more Italias in the humidor that I hope are better smokes than this one was. It was quite a disappointing experience.

Another reasonably disappointing cigar was tonight’s Montecristo.  It was a small cigar, not even sure where it came from or how long it’s been floating around the coolerdor, but it was about 4″ x 42 or 44.  It had a bit of a sour taste about half way through.  It fit the time I had allotted just fine, so that was a plus, but it just wasn’t all that good.

I noticed that the Romeo y Julieta Habana Reserve deal is still out there at http://www.ryjhabanareserveoffer.com/promo0828.html.  Nice cigars for $2 each delivered!  I gotta think anytime you can get a cigar that’s smokable for $2-$3 it’s a deal, let alone a name brand premium. The RyJ is a nice cigar, and even if it’s not your cup of tea, it’s nice to have on hand to gift to someone.

It’s a new month, so keep an eye out for this month’s contest coming soon. Also, remember you can subscribe to receive e-mails when this page is updated, and you can follow me on Twitter (@cigarcraig).  Also, I’m working on a new front page for CigarCraig.com.  Stay Tuned!

Finally, here’s a short video that my wife and son put together for me a bit ago:

Until the next cigar,
