CigarCraig’s 12 Spectacular Days of Cigar Giveaways 2013 Day 6: Two-fer Tuesday! Flor de Gonzales and Kings Cigars

I can’t believe this thing’s almost half way over!  The response continues to be enormous.  I was looking at some numbers and this week alone will come close to the total number of visits I had the first year I was online with CigarCraig.com.  Amazing and humbling, thank you all for visiting, that’s one of the reasons I run this annual giveaway. For those interested, chekk12 did come through with his address and his Atabey sampler will be shipping his way today. Today I need John Hateley To kindly send me his address, as he is the winner of the Tortuga and Ora Vivo sampler from Victor Vitale at Legacy Brands! I smoked an Ora Vivo last night and these, along with the Tortuga 215 Reserva, are really very special cigars. I encourage you to give them a try!  On to today’s giveaway!

Day 6

I try to do one thing a little different every year, so this year I’ve decided to have a “Two-fer Tuesday”!  There’s a mess of stuff under the tree today!  First, from Flor de Gonzales we have a five-pack of their cigars, a T-shirt and a pen. I’ve long been a fan of the Flor de Gonzales line, and there’s one from each line represented here. The 90 Miles 1980 is particularly exceptional, but you really can’t go wrong with any of them. They are all very flavorful and perfectly constructed cigars. Even their bundle line (not represented here) is a great cigar for around $2. My thanks to Yadi Vargas for providing this fine present.

Our second gift comes from Kings Cigars.  We met the Kings folks at the IPCPR show last July and they were the life of the party.  Their cigars are darned good too.  In today’s gift bag is a couple Kings Cigars T-shirts, some hats, long matches, a nice stainless steel cutter, and a five pack sampler of their excellent cigars. I’ve smoked the King of Kings and the Conde and enjoyed them greatly! These guys are new to the market, but their cigars are three years in the making and they are doing it right. Thanks to Anwar, Pete and Marlene at Kings cigars for sending this gift bag!

Kings Cigars

There you have it.  A bunch of T-shirts, goodies and excellent cigars!  Thanks again to Flor de Gonzales and Kings Cigars for making Two-fer Tuesday possible! You know the next step, load up the comments!

IPCPR 2013 – Flor de Gonzalez Cigars with Yadi Gonzalez

I’ve been sampling through the range of cigars by Flor de Gonzalez over the last few days.  I have smoked a few of their mixed filler line and enjoyed them, they make a tasty Churchill and large torpedo in the $2 range.  I won a 5-pack of the 90 Miles robustos a few years ago and enjoyed them quite a bit.  I was introduced to Yadi Gonzalez at the IPCPR show by Antonio Lam of Reinado Cigars and got to sit down with her for a few minutes and hear about what’s new.

Flor de Gonzalez

I was  interested to try the 1980. When Yadi said it had a San Andreas wrapper AND an Ecuador Broadleaf binder I was very interested.  It was a darned good smoke, although maybe I jumped the gun smoking it so soon after bringing it back from Vegas. It will be an awesome smoke all the way through in another month or two.  The one I smoked was incredible up until the last third,  which had a hint of ammonia, which is why I think another few months in the humidor will benefit the cigar. I’m looking forward to smoking more of these.

The Reserva Selecta in the No. 4 size (5 3/4 x 48) has a neat pigtail cap and is a very smooth, subtle and refined smoke.  This one gave me a lot of enjoyment sitting on the back patio on a sunny Saturday afternoon. It burned perfectly and I easily could have lit another one right away. I thought this cigar was very different from the others in it’s delicacy and complexity. This is the cigar you smoke in a tuxedo, although I thought it was darned good in the shorts and t-shirt I was wearing.  Very good!

The 90 Miles Churchill was a longer version of the robustos I’d enjoyed in the past. One thing that struck me while I smoked this was how I’ve come to feel like a 7” x 47 cigar isn’t a really big cigar any more.  The 60+ ring gauge cigars obviously dwarf what used to be considered a large cigar, and I guess I’ve become desensitized.  Funny that a corona doesn’t seem like a toothpick or anything, but the 47-52 rings seem smaller.  That’s neither here nor there, the  90 Miles Churchill is a nice, solid smoke for any time of day.

The Q-ban Fuerte is a full bodied Nicaraguan cigar.  The foot of this cigar had a dark core, likely the ligero, that comprised about half of the cigar.  I really enjoyed the flavor, but again some humidor time is going to do wonders for this cigar.  If I had to line these up in order of preference, this would come in in the middle, with the 1980 being first, the regular line being fourth, and the Q-ban and Reserva Selecta exchanging places depending on my mood. All four lines were very enjoyable and cigars I’d reach for again and again, and would be happy sharing with friends.

That’s all I have for now, until the next time,

Quick Cigar Update, Flor de Gonzalez 90 Miles – Friday May 14, 2010

Last night I smoked a Flor de Gonzales 90 Miles Robusto.  I had won a 5 pack of these in a contest on the My Cigar Ashes blog.  The contest was to write an article in the comments section about the pros and cons of the Cuban Embargo being lifted.  Here is my submission:

Here’s the thing: I think that what we’ll call, for practical purposes, the ‘domestic’ cigar industry is strong enough at this point to be minimally effected by the end of the embargo. There are enough great cigars being produced that very expensive and hard to come by Havanas will not pose a threat. I maintain that Cuban cigars are not necessarily better cigars than ‘domestic’ cigars, but different. They happen to have a flavor that appeals to me, but there are many Nicaraguan, Honduran and Dominican cigars that are just as good (heresy to some, I’m sure). The quality of tobacco and construction is the best it has ever been. On the other side of that, imagine being able to blend Cuban tobacco with Nicaraguan tobacco, this would definitely be a good thing! However, that assumes that there would be tobacco available to export, considering the struggle Habanos would have to supply such a large market, especially one that will consist largely of people who just have to try one to see what the fuss is all about. My personal opinion is that the rest of the world will be pissed at us when we end the embargo! I’m sure the allocations will be changed drastically to supply the new market, as well as the quality that will decline. I also think that the market for fakes will explode. Inexperienced cigar enthusiasts won’t know the difference and unscrupulous venders will pawn off just about anything on an unsuspecting buyer. I’d be just as happy if the embargo stayed in place, from a strictly selfish point of view.

Given all of the excellent submissions I was very surprised that I won.  Thanks to David and Flor de Gonzales cigars for the contest.  The cigars arrived with a personal letter from Yadina Gonzalez-Vargus, president of the company., which I thought was very cool!

The presentation was very nice, a printed 5 cigar cardboard box which contained very beautiful cigars.  I grabbed one and hung out on the deck for a while while I enjoyed the cigar.  It was very flavorful and burned very evenly.  I put this on a par with the very best cigars I’ve smoked in deliciousness and performance.  However when it reached the band it went downhill a little bit, but not so much that it was unpleasant, just wasn’t as tasty as it started out.  I set this down with an inch and a half or so to go with no regrets.  No regrets, that is, until the nicotine hit me.  I would have called this a medium to full cigar until after I was don and I got the cold sweats.  I’ll keep checking in on these, it will be interesting to see what some down-time in the humidor does to smooth them out a little.  If you can, give these a try, they are a very nice cigar.  I have enjoyed the “Cuban sandwich” Flor de Gonzalez cigars, I think they are a very worthy $2 cigar especially for the large torpedo and Churchill.  I’ll be looking for more from this company.  Good stuff.

Our latest contest  winner, Joel Scott, should have received his box of 5 Liga Privada cigars today.  I’m rather interested in hearing from him as I have no idea what cigars are in the box as I haven’t opened one.  Maybe he’ll send me a picture when he gets it (hint, hint). Congrats to him, and stay tuned for more goodies in the coming weeks!

That’s it for now!
