CigarCraig’s 12 Spectacular Days of Cigar Giveaways 2014 Day 12: Arandoza Cigars

It’s hard to believe it’s day 12 already! Lots of cigars and goodies given away and more to come!  Yesterday I delivered the Day 1 present to Adam.  I met him at To’Makao in Bethlehem, PA and handed off the goodies!  I love it when I can save on shipping and meet another great cigar friend in person! On the way up I smoked my first CAO Columbia and enjoyed it quite a bit. It was mellow and flavorful. The lucky winner of the box of CAO Colombia  Bogota is Frank Germaine. Please send me your address!  Let’s move along to Day 12, and a great Day 12 it is!

Day 12 of CigarCraig’s 12 Spectacular Days of CigarGiveaways brings us the third offering from Arandoza Cigars.  The Arandoza Red Label features a spicy San Andrés wrapper and is a strong, delicious cigar. Once again, this comes from the La Zona factory in Esteli. In addition to the Mexican maduro wrapper, it has a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan triple ligero filler.  I really like all the cigars in the Arandoza line, but the Red Label is my favorite.  Many thanks to Robert Arango at Arandoza Cigars for his enthusiastic support this year!

CigarCraig’s 12 Spectacular Days of Cigar Giveaways 2014 Day 7: Arandoza Cigars

Here we are at the halfway point, six days down and lots more to come!  I was more surprised at the number of people who hadn’t smoked Joya de Nicaragua than Tortuga, just because the Joya has a far wider distribution and has been around something like 42 years longer! Both are great, but this Tortuga 215 Reserva Regalo is something very special. The winner of the Tortuga cigars is Craig (Bowden), who has the good sense to be named Craig, but that had no bearing on the outcome of the random number generator (65). Please send your address.

It’s Day 7 of CigarCraig’s 12 Spectacular Days of Cigar Giveaways!  Once again we have a treat from the folks at Arandoza Cigars, a box of 20 of the Arandoza White Label Doble Corona.  This is a traditional sized double corona at 7 ¼” x 49 and comes from the La Zona Factory in Esteli. The White Label is a step up in strength from the Blue Label, well balanced and refined. I have a box of robustos myself and love them! If you like great cigars, you’re sure to like these. Robert Arango is really doing things right with the Arandoza brand and I thank him for participating yet again!

CigarCraig’s 12 Spectacular Days of Cigar Giveaways 2014 Day 4: Arandoza Cigars

I try, when I can, to smoke the cigar that’s in the giveaway if I have one, and yesterday I found both the Dunkel and the Bunker Buster in the humidor (don’t worry, I’m not digging into the presents!).  I really wanted to smoke the Dunkel, but I couldn’t bring myself to smoke an Oktoberfest cigar in December.  I suppose I’ll have to wait until September now to fire that one up! I did smoke my last 601 La Bomba Bunker Buster and it was awesome!  I don’t find these as strong as the regular La Bomba line, which i love, but boy was it good.  I’m certain that the winner of yesterday’s goodies is going to be thrilled with both.  Today’s winner comes from the group known as “Ward B” in Facebook and Cigarworld circles, and is a longtime reade. The winner of the Smoke Inn/Kiss My Ash Radio present is TriMarkC!  Please send your  current coordinates so I can get this stuff to you!  Happy Sunday, let’s get to Day 4!

Arandoza Cigars

Arandoza Cigars is a reasonably new brand that’s being made at Eric Espinoza’s La Zona factory in Esteli, Nicaragua. The Arandoza Blue Label Toro (box of 20) is a Nicaraguan puro with a Nicaraguan Habano wrapper and is a very nice smoke. Robert Arango takes pride in being a family owned company, La Zona is a hot factory, and the Arandoza line has been among my favorite new cigars over the past year or so. One of you is in for a treat.

An Arandoza, a CAO Flathead and a new Sindicato Cigar, and a CONTEST!

OK, lots going on today, so let’s get some cigars out of the way!  My palate’s a little flat still, I blame the change in weather. It’s gotten cold all the sudden, and I tend to gravitate to heavier maduros this time of year anyway, and I’ve been slow in following my own advice. One reason is it’ll be boring writing about the same couple cigars twice a week, and it’ll be equally boring smoking the same couple cigars!  I’ll adjust, it’s like that first day it drops in the 40s and you bundle up with gloves, and by January you’re in a t-shirt when it gets that warm. So I smoked some cigars, came across a neat cigar related item or two, and there’s a contest too!

Arandoza_White_RobustoThursday I decided to dig in to the box of Arandoza White Label Robustos that I apparently won in the most recent Cigar Federation Project Mañana Raffle.  I really like the cigars from Arandoza, which are made at Erik Espinosa’s La Zona Factory. This is a nice, refined Nicaraguan cigar with good balance and flavor. I really look forward to smoking more of these, there is just about nothing I don’t enjoy about this cigar, from the smoking to the presentation, it’s first class all the way.  I suppose it’s possible one of these falls into the contest box when it mails out. Stranger things have happened.  Thank you to Arandoza Cigars and Cigar Federation for supporting a worthy cause.

CAO_Flathead_CamshaftTo give my palate a proper test, I decided my Friday evening smoke should be a favorite cigar that I’ve smoked a bunch of over the past year or so. I really like the CAO Flathead line, with the only possible gripe I have being that the only real neat and tidy way to cut these is with a punch, which actually works out nicely for today’s post.  I used the first edition of the Screwpop Punch on the Flathead (if you don’t know, the head is flat, so it’s really hard to use anything but a punch on these).  I smoked the 556 Camshaft size of the Flathead, with is basically a toro, but I can recommend any size (including the 770) to anyone who enjoys bold, heavy bodied maduro cigars. These are about the perfect autumn cigar for me.  Another benefit is that they don’t roll off the table when you set them down!  Good stuff from Ricky Rodriguez and his team at CAO.

Yesterday, after spending time at the new house clearing brush and ancient overgrown hedges for a fence to contain Macha (and keep the 16 year old Cocker Spaniel from wandering off), I came home to a cool package in the mail. This package contained the redesigned Screwpop 2.0 Cigar Punch. When I tried the original punch almost two years ago, I made some suggestions to Brett at the company on some ways I thought it could be improved. One suggestion was to reverse the design so that the punch came off of the clip/opener end so that it could remain clipped to something, and the other was to make it self clearing, as the original version tended to keep the cap cuts in the body of the unit.  It seems my suggestions were taken to heart, and here we have the new version of the punch.  Of course, I had to try it out.  I Sindicato_Maduro_Magnumreceived some samples of the new Sindicato maduro last week, and these looked really good.  The samples were all of a larger size, so I went up the middle with the 6×60 Magnum size. This wasn’t the best test for the Screwpop 2.0 becuase the folks at Casa Fernandez, who make this cigar, use a bit of a pigtail cap. Not to be deterred, I gave it a punch. The 2.0 is a slightly larger bore than the 1.0, which is good, since it doesn’t render my old trusty punch obsolete. The cigar has my favorite San Andres Morrón wrapper, and has a nice, rich cocoa flavor. The 60 ring gauge was very comfortable given the box press, so it felt a bit smaller.  It burned very well and I can’t wait to smoke the Churchill and Toro sizes.  It smoked very well and was a fine way to wrap up a tiring, but productive day.

And now for something completely different

I received a note from one of my readers, Josh, in Salt Lake City, pointing me to his Etsy store.  He’s been making some really cool lamps from cigar boxes.  These have a really nice kind of steampunk feel to them and are very high end.  Take a look at his site when you get a chance! https://www.etsy.com/shop/saltcitylampworks

Contest

screwpop2.0Since Brett at Screwpop Tool, LLC was kind enough to send me more than one Cigar Punch 2.0, I figured it only made sense to have a contest and give one away!  Strike that, I’ll give TWO away!  Be aware, I can’t just send out a punch without including something to try it out on, so, invariably, some cigars will fall into the shipping boxes when they go out. I can’t help it, it just always seems to happen.  So to recap, the Screwpop 2.0 Cigar Punch no only bores a nice hole in your cigar and  cleans itself out, but you can also use it to take the cap off your favorite bottled beverage.  It’s got a handy and fashionable gated clip so you can wear it with pride or clip it to your key ring.  These are black anodized aluminum and look really sharp.  Leave a comment to enter and I’ll select two winners at random on Wednesday.  If you’ve won in the last six months you aren’t eligible, sorry.

That’s it for now, time to head over to the new house an clean up the mess we made yesterday!  Until the next time,

Some New Cigars: Romeo y Julieta, Arandoza and Flor de Gonzalez

I guess I’m trying to get a head of all of the upcoming IPCPR coverage, of which I will not be participating in. I’ve had some samples come in of new (and new to me) cigars that I felt compelled to smoke this week.  Also, I will be finding myself in the Chicago area for a few days the third weekend in August to visit a cigar shop or two, so anyone in the area with suggestions, or wants to meet for some smokes, let me know!  It’s always fun to visit shops in other cities, and I’ve never been to Chicago and hear there’s a lot of great shops. I also hear the taxes are high!  Local insight is appreciated.

RyJ_Nicaraguan_ToroThursday’s walk featured a Romey y Julieta RyJ Toro, the companies first Nicaraguan cigar. I seem to recall a time when Romeo y Julieta was made in Honduras, then production moved to the Dominican Republic. When I was at Cigarnival a couple weeks ago, I was surprised to run into my old friend Oliver Hyams at the Altadis booth. Oliver was the marketing guy with Gurkha, and Toraño before that. he’s now with Altadis and gave me this toro to try.  I really enjoyed smoking this cigar!  It had a smooth, sweet flavor that was unmistakably Nicaraguan, and very good.  The burn and draw were perfect, and it was a very nice smoking experience.  This is a cigar I’d happily smoke again, and will be on the look out for more.

Arandoza_Red_ToroFriday I chose a new cigar from Robert Arango at Arandoza Cigars.  The Arandoza Red is being released at the IPCPR show and joins the White and Blue (I see a pattern here!).  These are also made in Erik Espinosa’s La Zona factory in Esteli.  They tell me that it’s the strongest so far, with a beautiful dark San Andrés maduro wrapper and Nicaraguan Binder and fillers with triple ligero. The cigar started off with some horsepower, thick, rich, dark flavors. By the time I got home from my mile walk, I was starting to buy into the strength hype!  by the time I was at about the one and a half inch mark, I was in need of a Coke!  This is a powerful smoke, but delicious!  There’s no compromising flavor for strength in this cigar. Another winner from Arandoza as I’ve enjoyed their other offerings as well.

FdG_90M.RAYesterday we spent the day doing some landscaping and beating ourselves up. After a swim, a nap, and some dinner,  a cigar was long overdue.  While at Cigarnival I talked to Yadi Gonzalez, the lady behind the Flor de Gonzalez brand, and she slipped me a prototype lancero that she’s been working on.  Judging by the band markings, this may one day be a limited edition in the 90 Miles line.  I measured this lancero at seven inches by 38,  and it had a crude pigtail cap.  One can’t criticize the cap on a prototype, in my opinion, it’s just a test sample.  The cigar smoked very well, it had a nice draw and billows of smoke. This cigar had some strength along with the dark cocoa/coffee flavors. Yadi didn’t share any details of the blend on this cigar, but I’d bet it’s predominantly Nicaraguan, and may have had the San André s maduro wrapper, I can’t be sure, but I really liked it. I hope this is released, as I really enjoyed the heck out of it for the better part of two hours sitting on the deck listening to The Cigar Authority podcast, enjoying the welcome addition of my buddy Barry Stein to the line up. If you haven’t tried cigars from Flor de Gonzales, give them a try, the 1980 is my personal favorite, but they are all good right down to the “Upright Bundle” line that you can get for about $2 for the Churchill or large torpedo.

That’s all I got, until the next time,

CigarCraig
