La Alianza Rosado, 1881 Perique, Murder Hornet and LCA Thoughts, and Ortega Serie D Connecticut Cigars

While roughly half of the cigar industry is in Las Vegas at the PCA show, I’m here maintaining the status quo. I have my reasons for not going, ranging from not being ready to travel, to being unwilling to commit resources to something that has failed to appreciate it in the past. I hope everyone has a great show and enjoys themselves, and there’s a lot of folks I miss seeing and meeting. I have been scounging to find new cigars to smoke, so one that was new, to me, at least, was a La Alianza Rosado which was gifted to me by my friend Patrick. I’m not sure if this is a catalog exclusive or what, but it was the Churchill Extra at 7″ x 54, and has Nicaraguan binder and filler with an Ecuador Sungrown (?) Rosado wrapper. Of course, this wrapper description doesn’t really tell us much. Rosado is a color, Ecuador is known for its cloud cover so the sungrown part is sketchy, unless it’s grown in a sunny part of Ecuador, which is could be, I suppose. I don’t know Ecuador very well. It’s made by Ernesto Carillo, so that’s good enough for me. A little shopping around tells me it’s a reasonably priced cigar, at around $7, and I’d have to say this is an outstanding value. I really enjoyed the cigar, it burned well, and reminded me a little bit of the third iteration of the El Rico Habanos, the ones Holts sold in the paper bundles around 2000. They weren’t like the strong ones in the mid ’90s, they were more medium bodied, and had a nice, sweet flavor. This was a nice smoke! Thanks PJ!

My next selection goes back about five years into the humidor. Since Saka is going on and on about making cigars with pipe tobacco, I thought I’d smoke a cigar with some Perique in the blend. I wrote this in 2016 about the 1881 Perique Maduro by Tabacalera Incorporada: “The cigar has a Dominican maduro wrapper, binder form the Philippines (from a 1997 crop), and the filler is 18% Perique from a farm in Louisiana owned by Daughters & Ryan and Philippine leaf. Perique is typically a pipe tobacco, it’s usually blended because it’s very strong, and has a distinctive flavor. This type of tobacco was being cultivated in Louisiana by the local Native American tribes when Europeans wandered into the area in the 1700s.” At that time Daughters & Ryan was distributing this line in the U.S., but I don’t think that’s the case any longer. After five years in the humidor, the cigar is still very good. The fruitiness and sweetness I noted five years ago are still there, it’s still a unique cigar, although the flavors are less distinct, they’ve melded a little over time. It was a very enjoyable smoke, and that’s not something I thought I’d ever have said about a cigar from the Philippines!

While I was at the LouLiga Lounge last week I picked up

a Room 101 Murder Hornet, which is a Limited Cigar Association release. The LCA is part of the Privada Cigar Club, which is directly associated with the LouLiga Lounge, I would venture to guess they are partners in some manner. That’s irrelevant to this. I’m going to be a little controversial. The LCA is the company that put out cigars like the Cigarbon, Cookie Monster, Death Bucket, etc. They create a stir, always sell out, in kind of a hit and run sort of fashion. I  ass

Anyway, I’m not a fan of the whole thing, I’m sure the Privada Cigar Club is great, and I’m sure retailers love the LCA, but as a consumer, and a fairly traditional old dude, I’m not feeling it. that being said, the Murder Hornet was excellent. It’s 5 ½” x 44 corona  and is made at the Raíces Cubanas factory in Honduras.  It’s a bit

Finally, I had forgotten to smoke the Ortega Serie D Connecticut that I had bought a while

ago in the sampler. I corrected that problem last evening. This was new to me, I don’t think Eddie had a Connecticut in his original Serie D line up. This one has an Ecuador Connecticut wrapper, Ometepe binder (that’s interesting!) and Nicaraguan fillers. I would recommend going on the Ortega website and buying these, because they are very good. I have a few shade cigars I really like, but most of them are on the lower tier and I put off smoking them, as evidenced by this one. Ones I like a lot, coincidentally, are made in Honduras. This one is rich and creamy. It is smooth with no bitterness or grassy flavors. It’s like a good coffee with cream and sugar (I drink mine black, so call it an iced coffee with cream and sugar).  I really enjoyed it and ordered more. Eddie’s cigars are really good!

That’s all for today, until the next time,

Here’

s some news from Drew Estate. I’ve smoked several of the Year of the Rat from the last couple years and they are really quite good cigars. Over the last dozen years I guess I’ve smoked a number of Drew Estate’s “Rat” themed cigars, going back to 2009 when Steve Saka gave me Dirty Rats with plain paper bands, this might be one of my favorites. Hopefully they will remain the same.

Drew Estate’s 2021 limited edition Liga Privada Unico Serie “Year of the Rat” will become available exclusively to Drew Diplomat Program participants beginning in the week of July 6th.

Liga Privada Unico Serie Year of the Rat debuted in 2016 as an exclusive cigar available only at the Drew Estate Lounge inside the B

B&T Center, home to the National Hockey League’s Florida Panthers, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the team’s only appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals. One night, during the 1995-1996 season, a rat appeared in the Panthers’ locker room before a game. Panthers’ player, Scott Mellanby, “one-timed” the rat with his hockey stick, sending it against the wall and killing it. During that night’s game, Mellanby scored two goals … a feat that a teammate described as the “rat trick.” A few nights later, fans began throwing rubber rats onto the ice whenever the Panthers scored a goal, and for that season, a tradition was born. In 2020, the Year of the Rat was re-released as a Drew Diplomat Program event exclusive cigar. For 2021, the Liga Privada Unico Serie Year of the Rat limited edition cigar’s d

istribution has grown, and it is now available to all Drew Diplomat Program participants.

Like the previous Year of the Rat editions, the 2021 Year of the Rat is presented in the Corona Gorda vitola (5 1⁄2 x 46) and is made using a blend of lush Connecticut Broadleaf capa, flavorful Brazilian capote and rich tripa tobaccos from Nicaragua and Honduras. Each 2021 Liga Privada Unico Serie Year of the Rat features the Unico Serie’s iconic fantail head and every cigar is individually wrapped in gold foil. The cigars are packaged in beautifully embossed, blue 10-count Liga Privada Unico Serie boxes.

From Sag Harbor, New York, Jonathan Drew, Founder and President of Drew Estate, says, “When these dirty Rats first appeared, the only chance you got to catch one was by attending one of my personal Drew Estate events but the Rat infestation has grown to become more accessible to Liga Privada Ratters to snag one of these rare and tasty treats. You better act fast though because this Rat race will end soon!”

News: TAA 2021 Exclusive Cigar ‘Brick House Beginnings’ Ships

This looks interesting, I really like the Brick House cigars, and I have a TAA retailer nearby, so I’ll have to check them out. I still want to get to Tampa to visit the remodeled factory, I have a pretty good feeling I could get in…check out this news from J.C. Newman.

Before we could start on the major restoration we just completed at our El Reloj Cigar Factory in Tampa, our team had to clear out almost 70 years’ worth of items from the building. During this process, we uncovered some hidden gems.

One of those was a trap door from the 1930s with a secret staircase that went from the General Managers’ office down into the basement where he could hide when the Tampa Mafia would come through looking for payroll cash. Another was J.C.’s travel trunk that accompanied him on his voyage from Hungary to Cleveland in 1889. But perhaps the most exciting find for fans of our brands was a stash of 10-year-old Brick House cigars that was tucked away in the basement years ago to age and wait for a special occasion to arise. When we rediscovered them during our 125th year, we thought that sharing them with our TAA retailers would be a perfect fit.

Fans of Brick House will recognize the flavor of its distinctive blend but will taste some notable differences in this aged version. The many years that have passed since these were ro

lled have created a smooth and balanced taste that only time has the ability to do. Through the aging process, the flavors have married and created a cigar more mellow and a bit less spicy than its contemporary counterpart. Discover a taste of history and savor this once-in-a-decade Brick House.

This cigar has now shipped and will be arriving on TAA Retailers’ shelves soon.

News: Fratello Announces Fuoco in Classico, Bianco and Oro

Several years ago Fratello made one of the Firecrackers for United Cigars. Oddly, this was one of my favorite Firecrackers, and one of my favorite cigar memories is smoking one of those on the Spanish Steps in Rome. I liked the irony of smoking a cigar with an Italian name in Italy, on the Spanish Steps, made by Spanish speaking peoples. I don’t often smoke smaller cigars, but I really like having cigars of this size around for times when I only have a short time to smoke, and these will be great additions to the line, I especially look forward to the Bianco, which is my favorite of the Fratello range.

A Plasencia Cigars Sampler and the LouLiga Lounge Grand Opening

At the end of last year when everyone was posting their top ten cigars of the year, I, being the rebel, posted my top cigars I hadn’t smoked yet. A little bit of me did it to test Halfwheel’s Consensus process, to see how closely they paid attention, and it appears they either do, or I’m just that far under the radar any more, I have made appearances on the consensus in the past though when I’ve done a list. Anyway, I had said that I hadn’t smoked any of the Plasencia Alma series last year, so I ordered a nice sampler from my friends at Fox Cigars, and smoked them this passed week. I had smoked the AlmaFuerte Sixto II not long ago and was thrilled to get my hands on another one. Somehow getting one as a part of a sampler felt better than buying one at

the store for $22, and I don’t see the sampler listed anymore, and I forget what I paid for it. It was five cigars, the Alma Fuerte in Robustus I and Sixto II, Alma Del Fuego in Concepciòn Toro and Candente Robusto, and an Alma Del Campo Tribu Robusto.  I always joke that these are named after my grandmother, Alma Vanderslice, but I’m sure that’s not the case. I quite enjoyed the flavors in all of these, although I thought the Alma Fuego was just too darned strong for me, that is to say I became tired of it being so strong

by the end. The Del Campo seemed to be to more medium bodied to me, and all three were excellent examples of Nicaraguan cigars.  They all had rich dark tobacco flavors, with the Fuerte especially having a slight sweetness on the lips pre-light. The weird thing was that, and it might have been the weather or something unrelated, but I got migraines each night after I smoked one of these. Probably a coincidence, as I’ve smoked plenty of Nicaraguan puros before without issue, and gotten plenty of migraines before without having smoked Plasencia cigars! Anyway, Thumbs up on both Plasencia cigars and Fox Cigars for exceptional customer service!

Yesterday I took a drive into the Fishtown section of Philadelphia to visit the grand opening of the LouLiga Cigar Lounge. If you follow cigars on social media, I’m not sure how you could avoid having heard about this place, or at least it’s owner, Luis Rodriguez. Luis has been a long time cigar ambassador, and had realized his dream with this new lounge in a very cool area in the city. It’s in the same block of buildings as The Fillmore, which is a music venue, The Punch Line comedy club, and Philadelphia Distilling, with the Rivers Casino and Convention Center more or less across the street. When I arrived, the place was packed. To be honest, if I hadn’t seen my old friend Antonio Lam (Reinado Cigars, watch for his new cigar, the Grand Apex), I probably would have bought a handful of cigars, snapped some pics and gone home. However, I lit up a Stolen Throne Crook of the Crown Toro and hung out with Antonio and his fiancé for a few hours.

The Lounge is nice. The air handlers work well, it has an industrial feel which is consistent with the building. The furniture is comfortable, there’s plenty of TVs and the humidor is huge. While the humidor shelves were fairly sparsely stocked, what was there was very high quality and fairly pried for a city location. Luis knows his stuff and is very in tune with the bo

utique brands. I’m not sure how this will relate to the casual, fresh out of the concert, distillery, comedy club, etc, patron who is stopping in for a cigar and know Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta and Cohiba and that’s about it, but it’s going to be a great place for cigar geeks. Luis was an excellent host, greeting everyone who came in warmly. When I got home I tried one of Luis’ own cigars, from an undisclosed, yet prominent, factory. It was quite good, a robusto with some spice in the beginning, and some floral near the end. It’s certainly a place to visit if you find yourself in Philadelphia.

That’s all for today. It’s the Fourth of July, so, as with every year, it’s also my wedding anniversary (34), so I’ll be finding something good to smoke. Be careful out there!  Until the next time,
