cker and immediately smelled the (fancy word here…) “greatness” this cigar has to offer. The flavor profile was busy, but I will let your own senses detect what you get from yours…but nonetheless, this one has many great aromas and flavors while smoking. I walked around the downtown Tyler area and with the nice weather, I really enjoyed smoking this cigar. I can say that it had no bad aftertaste, stayed lit well, drew pretty hard but overall it is one of the best LGC cigars I have had since they changed them many years ago. Now the ‘N has only been around about eight months or so, but I still choose this cigar as my favorite all around LGC.

Great to hear that Tommy’s lost 20 pounds!  I’m sure the boot camp is doing wonders, but the activity along with the reward of a fine cigar is helping with the motivation!  Keep up the great work!  I love the LGC Serie N, it’s a wonderful cigar, and I had the great pleasure of taking part in their Webcast for Serie N Day a few months back.  The presentation is excellent, but the cigar is even better!  That dark, oily wrapper is a thing of beauty and the lighter colored “N” applied to the wrapper exhibits an attention to detail that carries through to the rest of the cigar.  A serious winner!  Take a look on the Team La Gloria site to see Tommy’s winning photo which he referenced above, I tried to link to it here, but couldn’t figure out a way! Guest Take A Cigar For A Walk Review: Tommy Berry and a Pirates Gold!

Here’s another update from our intrepid TACFAW (Take A Cigar For A Walk) reporter, Tommy Berry:

Hello folks! I hope that everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend…I know I did and got to do some fishing with the kids…as well as smoke several great cigars. One in particular that I want to review is the “Pirate’s Gold Rothschild” that I smoked this weekend during a walk. I received this cigar from a friend of mine over at Cigarworld.com. I had never heard of these before, so I knew nothing about them. After a little research, I found that they are priced between $1-$1.50 each, what a value. I like value sticks sometimes, but the key word there is “sometimes”. Most companies think they need to cut back on body and flavor to hit the “cheap cigar” mark. I can tell you that the folks that made this one did no such thing…it was great. With its Robusto size, Ecuador wrapper and Nicaraguan and Brazilian filler…it was a great little smoke!

 

I began my walk just after lighting it. It smelled a

wesome, as this one had some age on it per the sender. It

stayed lit without any problems, lasted me a good 90 minutes to the nub…and yes, I smoked this sucker down to the nub. Overall, I really enjoyed and would recommend this smoke. I see that you can find these at a few places sometimes for a 20 pack, less than $20! I’d try another!

 

I started boot camp last week and it is killing me…but I am loving it! This Marine (and she’s a tough lady) is exactly what I have needed! She is also really helping me out with my diet…and I am still eating good, just added some things and took away a few others that I can live without. I can already tell the difference. I will give you more information on it once I get through a few weeks…if I survive.

 

We had some delays on our home purchase, however it is still moving forward and we hope to be in the new home by the end of June. I will be sure to keep you posted!

rward to hearing more about your progress!  As far as the home buying goes, if it is meant to be it will happen.   Usually the way it works is that the deal may fall through, and the next week you’ll see on the news it blew up in some strange methane explosion or something.  What will be, will be! You’ll be thrilled when it happens!

I grabbed a Puro Indios Viejo toro for my walk, thinking that this cigar is a cousin of sorts to the Pirates Gold.  I’ve enjoyed these in the past, and they are usually dirt cheap.  This one smoked like it was dirt cheap, but the flavor was good.  I always liked the Puros Indios flavors, but back in the ’90s they were known for being plagued with construction issues.  “Dowel Rod” and “Tent Peg” were frequent comparisons. This one had a loose enough draw, bu the smoke production was just off, as if it was over-humidified, which would be strange since I smoke out of the same humidor all the time.  Anyway, after my walk, about half way through it straightened itself our and was an acceptable smoke.  If you can find these for $20 -$25 a bundle go for it, especially in the corona size, they are a bona fide value.

een looking forward to for some time.  We, once again, had the honor and privilege of being on the guest list for a New York City Dinner Cruise hosted by our friend Mitchell Orchant of C-Gars Ltd.   Mitchell is an old friend.  We first “met” through an e-mail and continued through the alt.smokers.cigars usenet group back in the ’90s.  We met face to face at a little herf in Vegas in 1999 known amongst those in the usenet world as “Boondoggle III“, which was held at the MGM Grand over a 3 day span.  This event comprised about 300 people who only knew one another through the wild west of the internet, an oddity at the time!  Anyway, we’ve been to Mitchell and his wife’s wedding in London, we’ve taken them sight-seeing in NYC, and been friends for a long time. Back to the event.  In attendance were  Marc Aub and Mike DaVersa of Brothers of the Leaf, LLC, makers of Palio cutters and Esencia cigars, whom I had met last year and seen at the IPCPR show last July.  Always a pleasure to chat with Marc, who’s as passionate as they come about his products.  Mitchell is the UK distributor for Palio Cutters, and just became the UK distributor for Arturo Fuente cigars, so, in addition to the fine Bolivar Belicoso Finos in the goody bag, there was a Fuente Hemingway Signature as well. These happen to be 2 of my all time favorite cigars that I rarely get to enjoy.We also got to catch up with some other old friends, Karen from Albany, George from South Jersey and even Barry from California.  I finished the night off with a Partagas Petit Coronas Expeciale from a box I had been waiting to arrive at cruise time last year.  I’ve really been digging these cigars and hope that the exchange rate comes down a little in the future so that I can get another box one day! I was even able to gift Mitchell a cigar, something that’s pretty rare as he always declines.  I had an extra Partagas Serie P No.2 that I got at his wedding coming up on 5 years ago. The Hunters and Frankau rep was handing these out at the reception, and Mitchell’s dad insisted I get an extra to take home.  I figured this would be a fitting “thank you” for the nice things he does for us.  At the end of the night Mitchell opened a box of Opus X Perfecxion X and passed it around, to cap off the evening.

LAst night I selected a Fuente Anejo 50 that had been kicking around the box for a while now, maybe 4 years.  It was the first of this line that I’ve smoked and boy was it tasty.  It started a little slow, but it built into just the kind of cigar I like.  It had the nice, dark flavors I like and just the right level of nicotine.  Goes with out saying that it was well made, as it’s a Fuente.  I know these are pricey and availability is spotty, but if you have the chance, smoke one, I don’t think you’ll have any regrets. I selected this in honor of Mitchell’s a fore mentioned acquisition of the Fuente distributorship in the UK.

Guest Take a Cigar for a Walk Review: DB Takes a Bolivar for a “Mow”!

Here’s a great twist on “Take a Cigar For A Walk” by our favorite serviceman, DB Dronnoff.  I always love when I read about, or see, someone enjoying a high end cigar while doing something so mundane as mowing the lawn!  We have our “yard ‘gars”, but why not enjoy a killer smoke while doing something that may be considered boring or routine!  So, without further ado, here’s DB:

After reading many of Craig’s Cigar Walk reviews I thought it was time to get off my @$& and submit a review myself.  This time I decided instead of just a walk I would also do something constructive (Honey-do’s) like mowing the grass.  So here goes my “Take a cigar on a mow” submital.

It was a unusually sunny day here in the Suffolk region of the UK, and my grass had started to get out of control.  Before I cranked up my trusty mower, I reached into my humidor and pulled out a cigar I have been dying to sample.  A Bolivar Libertadores Exclusivo Francia that was gifted to me by a fellow BOTL from France.  The Bolivar Petit Libertador is a 2008 France regional edition and comes in at 4” (102mm) by 50, making it a petit robusto.

After several pulls on the mover cord and a a test run, I lite up this little powerhouse for what I was assured would be a great experience. This cigar has the classic Bolivar band, with a second band which reads Exclusivo Francia. Immediately at the start I detected a creamy taste that ended up extending about halfway through this 4″ cigar.  Midway thr

r a light citrus zestiness started and ended up continuing until the end of the cigar.  This surprising flavor makes it a wonderful summer smoke when you don’t want anything too heavy…Like mowing your yard.

The burn of this cigar was quite even despite smoking it outside walking around.  I have found that in these cases the shifting winds tend to force the cigar to burn uneven.  That didn’t happen to the Bolivar, maybe it was just luck.  The ash was a light solid texture mixed with peppery flakes.  It never really had a chance to grow longer than 1.5″ due to my marching up and down the yard pushing the mower.

I soon finished my mowing task and retired to a chair out back to finish enjoying this fine cigar…without working up a sweat.  Bottom line: Apart from being a gorgeous looking cigar, the Bolivar Libertadores is an amazing smoke, with a light citrus zestiness throughout.

Thanks again to DB for the excellent report on what most of us consider a very special cigar!   As for myself, I had a fine Memorial day at the Delaware Park racetrack watching the ponies and enjoying a Joya de Nicaragua Cabinetta Robusto.  This line extension is one of my favorite cigars lately.  No matter what size, they always deliver a nice smoking experience all the way around.  I do need to get my hands on more of the Lanceros though.  It was awfully fun watching them being rolled in the factory!

Gee, I Smoked Some More Cigars This Week! La Aurora, My Joya de Nicaragua Blend, and a Dirty Rat

It’s the Memorial Day weekend, and time to remember all those who gave their lives in service to the country so that we have a shot at enjoying a fine cigar once in a while!  Thank You!  Now, on to some cigar nonsense!

I caught an article this week via Twitter that Guillermo Leon had completed his purchase of the La Aurora cigar division from the parent company, Grupo Leon.  I couldn’t think of a better cigar to celebrate this event than a La Aurora 107 Lancero that I had picked up when I met up with him last month at The Wooden Indian (the day my grand-daughter was born. Hard to believe she’s 4 weeks old already!).  I took this cigar for a walk with my wife to the local convenience store, about a mile round trip.  It certainly was a very nice cigar.  There was a time in the recent past that you could almost expect a lancero to be plugged, but I haven’t had o

ne that wasn’t perfectly made in some time.  As a side note, I’ve been finding that a lot of the cigars I’ve been smoking have been well made. Either my selections have improved or there is an over-all trend in higher quality standards in the industry.  Not complaining!  It used t really annoy me when I’d invest my valuable cigar time and have a difficult stick. Back to the 107, I’ve now smoked this in the corona and lancero and enjoy the blend. I think the lancero is more of a good thing.  I should try some of the other sizes.  While these aren’t exactly what I look for taste wise in a cigar, they do give me a lot of pleasure, and I strive to keep an open mind.

I selected one of the cigar that I brought back from Cigar Safari in Nicaragua for my Friday night cigar.  This was one of the ones that were made for us as a result of our blending session at Joya de Nicaragua. I chose the the Corojo wrapper, and a Sumatra binder as well as Seco from Condega.  I focused on Esteli for the Viso and Ligero, with a little Condega Ligero thrown in for good measure.  What I ended up with was a fairly strong cigar, both in flavor and body.  I loved it, make no mistake, but it rivaled the Joya de Nicaragua Dark Corojo in sheer power, as a matter of fact, I commented to my son that I thought I had blended an Antaño Dark Corojo!  He had smoked the first of his batch, and he had used much more ligero in his, and it wasn’t bad, his shade wrapper may have toned it down a bit.  I smoked this cigar down to finger burning size, while it was one dimensional, it was a good dimension! I wouldn’t smoke these often, and I have four more resting to see how they develop over time. I continue to be amazed that a cigar that was rolled a mere 8 weeks ago is so perfectly smokable!  Thanks to Mario Perez at Joya de Nicaragua and Jonathan Drew for this exercise.  I’m reminded that I need to find some Cabinetta Lanceros sometime soon…great cigar! I actually think the Cabinetta Serie is my favorite blend from JdN for overall balance.

 

Saturday was a beautiful day, so for my evening walk I went with a Liga Privada Dirty Rat pre-release version that Steve Saka had sent me in January of 2010.  This cigar has since been released as a Liga Privada Serie Unico as of last years IPCPR show.  I’ve had several of these between the pre-release samples

and the production line and they have all been exceptional.  Deep and dark, these are well made and seriously satisfying.  The stalk cut, Connecticut Habano wrapper is a thing of beauty and just tasty as all get out.  I lamented to my wife at the time that I should have grabbed one of the longer prototype Rats I brought back from Cigar Safari, as this cigar was finished too soon.  I could have easily spent another hour enjoying the deliciousness of the Dirty Rat.  Truly a spectacular cigar.

Today is another day, not sure what I’ll pull out of the humidor yet, and tomorrow could present more opportunities still.  Tuesday we head to NYC for a private cigar event, which we’ve been looking forward to.  Everyone have a safe and enjoyable holiday, and remember all those who paid the ultimate price so that we can enjoy what we enjoy!
