Memorial Day Weekend Smokes: Alec Bradley, American Eagles and Grimalkin

Sunday I grabbed an Alec  Bradley American Classic Blend Gordo for an afternoon walk. I picked up a handful of these reasonably priced and very tasty 6 x 60 cigars at the Cigars International Super Store in Bethlehem, PA when Alan Rubin was there for an event.  It’s a nice, fairly mild Ecuador Connecticut shade wrapped cigar that burns well and has loads of flavor.  It’s the kind of cigar that one can smoke any time of the day and enjoy.  I may need to pick up a few more of these to have around.  The band and name were a good fit for the holiday weekend.

Monday was Memorial Day, a day to remember all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice so that we have the freedom to enjoy such a simple pleasure as a cigar.  I selected an American Eagles robusto for an afternoon smoke.  This cigar has a unique camo pattern applied to a Habano wrapper.  It’s a buttery smooth, delicious cigar and you can taste the occasional hint of the candela, maduro and Connecticut shade patchwork every now and then.  It’s a pricey cigar, but a portion of the proceeds go to the Semper Fi Fund, not that you can write off the purchase as a charitable donation. It’s a great smoke that should not be dismissed because it looks funny, but good luck finding it if you drop it in the grass!

Monday evening’s cigar was a Grimalkin Toro that I had picked up when I visited Classic Cigar Parlor in Doylestown, PA. a few weeks ago.  Grimalkin was one of my favorite cigar finds of last year, and is a wonderful smoke.  It’s complex and nuanced, but pairing it with a very spicy Goya Ginger Beer was a bit of a mistake.  The ginger spice made the cold ginger beer almost seem not cold enough.  If you’re not expecting it, the spice hits you in the back of the throat and can cause a bit of a coughing fit.  It would be much better with a heavier cigar, but I still love the Grimalkin, and will miss the cat eyes when this cigar is re-branded to La Musa in the coming months.  I’ve enjoyed everything from the Emilio family of cigars, and Gary Griffith has the Midas touch when it comes to tobacco.

The last couple evenings I decided to take some time off from smoking cigars I wanted to really pay attention to, and selected a Macanudo 1968 Robusto on Tuesday, and a Gurkha Seduction Robusto tonight.  These are two cigars I  really enjoy from time to time, and have featured here in the past.  The 1968s came back with my from my trip to the Dominican Republic, so they bring back fond memories. The Gurkha is an especially nice smoke, well made and delicious.

I’d like to offer my congratulations to Charlie Greenbacker of StogieReview.com and his wife on the arrival of their first child, a son, born today.  My friend,  your life has changed in ways you can’t even imagine!  Enjoy the journey and feel secure in the fact that your cigars will now have more of a chance to age!

That’s all for now, until the next time,

End of the Week Cigars: Villiger, a Special Fuente, a La Gloria Cubana and a San Lotano

Wednesday evening I was , once again, in experimental mode…OK, that’s a lie.  The truth is that I have one coolerdor that has some small sampler boxes floating around in it and this particular one was down to two cigars, so I wanted to get things tidied up a little.  Regardless of the truth, I picked out this Villiger 1888 robusto from said dwindling sampler.  I recall enjoying the 1888 Fuerte quite a bit, so I was curious about  the regular 1888.  This was the robusto, and was a nice looking cigar with a milk chocolate colored wrapper.  I enjoyed it quite a bit, it was medium bodied, well made and consistent in flavor through the smoke. It wasn’t mind-blowing, but certainly a good cigar.  I would certainly smoke this cigar on a regular basis, but I never seem to see these in my local shops. Thanks to Anne at Villiger for sending me the samples and for providing a really nice gift in last December’s 12 Days giveaway!

Thursday I decided to dig into the new cigar from Smoke Inn‘s Microblend series, the Arturo Fuente Solaris.  This is a 6″ x 49 belicoso that Fuente had made 6 years ago in a small batch and found a home for it at Smoke Inn.  It’s unlike the other cigars in the microblend series in that they had no hand in the blending of it.  Still, having a super exclusive Fuente product is a big deal.  The sun grown wrapper is quite light on this cigar, and it’s very visually appealing. I’ll be the first to say that Fuente makes some great cigars, however I don’t often find myself smoking them.  I’ve smoked many over the years, and gravitated toward smaller sizes in the Hemingway and Don Carlos lines.  I expected to be wow’d by this cigar and I was impressed with it over-all. This is a cigar I wouldn’t have had the chance to try if it weren’t for the generosity of Smoke Inn.  Be sure to give them a visit when shopping online or in the South Florida area.

Friday was the end of a long week, and, more importantly, the beginning of a long weekend!  What better way to start it off than with a favorite, the La Gloria Cubana Artesanos Retro Especiale Cubano.  I brought this box back with me from the Dominican Republic and really enjoy them when I have time for a large cigar.  It’s 6½” x 58 and is a good, smooth hour and a half or so of relaxation.  As has been customary lately, I took my son’s new dog for a walk along with this cigar.  A mile long walk and I still had three quarters of the cigar to relax on the front porch with for a while.  I’ve had the pleasure of smoking a bunch of these since their release and am always delighted by the interesting flavors.  I love a lot of the La Gloria Cubana line, and this is among my favorites.

Saturday turned out to be an interesting day.  First, I received a call from my friend Greg saying he noticed a new cigar store in the area.  It turns out to be a new location for a shop that has been around a while. More on that in a bit. Several months ago my wife and I had been to a unique little vintage record store and noticed some cigar box art in one section of the store. I had done some housekeeping in the basement and had a dozen or so empty cigar boxes laying around, and my wife and I took them down to see if they wanted them. They were thrilled with the boxes and insisted upon trading them for a very rare record that the proprietor had found for my wife.  I love the artistry of cigar boxes, but we tend to take them for granted. It’s so cool when someone who has little interest in cigars is so appreciative of them.  On the way home we stopped at the cigar shop.  I have been to several locations of this local chain, and have only been impressed by one of them.  This shop has moved into a free standing, ex-convenience store which has had more businesses in it over the last 20-some years than I can remember.  I had a job interview in one of them 10 years ago.  They have a Montecristo lounge which looks nice, and a huge walk-in humidor that needs more stock, needs to have the split and broken cigars removed, and needs more price labels on the boxes.  I’m a self proclaimed cheap bastard, and price plays a part in my buying decisions, so I don’t like surprises at the register and won’t buy what isn’t priced.  I picked up a couple of the new Romeo by Romeo y Julieta just because I’ve been wanting to try them, but I can’t see visiting this shop often. It is located in  such a place that there are a couple friends I could meet up there for a smoke, and I really hope they make it, but they need to fix a few things.  I came home and smoked a San Lotano Oval Toro because I saw them there but I was scared off by the condition of some of the cigars around them.  The Oval is a fantastic smoke and couldn’t have been a better end to the day.  Deep, rich flavors and a perfect burn.  These are pricey, but delicious and I look forward to trying the maduro.  It’s a neat shape too.

That’s it for now.  More great cigars to smoke!  Since my son got his dog, I’ve been taking her on my evening walks with me.  I’m open to suggestions on “Dog Walker” cigars!  There will, no doubt, come a time when the weather is less than ideal for enjoying a fine cigar, so what does everyone keep on hand for those occasions?

Until the next time,

Memorial Day Weekend Cigar Patriotism!

Since it’s the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend here in the US,  I thought I’d throw together a little list of serious threats to our rights, those same rights that Americans laid down their lives to protect.  So in between great cigars and holiday weekend fun, take a moment to remember all those who’ve paid the ultimate price, and honor them by doing your best to prevent our liberties from being trampled!

California:  Here’s a great letter from Matt Lanford, owner of Santa Barbara Cigar and Tobacco – NO on Prop 29 – Open Letter to Lance Armstrong and Mayor Bloomberg

Illinois: Trying to slip a tax increase through on a holiday weekend –  Illinois House votes to increase cigarette tax

Some good news in Illinois: Davidoff Announces Opening of Cigar Lounge in Westmont, Illinois

Florida: I’m personally against making up new laws instead of enforcing existing ones.  Adults should be able to chose to smoke flavored products, children aren’t allowed to buy them! Selling flavored tobacco products could be prohibited in Miami-Dade

Virginia: Another case of making up a new law instead of enforcing an existing one, this time it’s littering.  We don’t do ourselves any favors when we leave our butts behind.  Dispose of them properly as you would any trash!  Civic league pushes for smoking ban on Chic’s Beach

And don’t forget: WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO: Not Allow The FDA To Regulate Premium Cigars

Write, call, fax, e-mail your elected officials and let thim know what you think!  It only takes a minute, and Cigar Rights of America and IPCPR websites both have terrific tools for contacting the right people.

That’s it for now, just a little Public Service Announcement on a Saturday morning.  Have a safe and enjoyable weekend!  I’ll be back to my regular content tomorrow, as the cigar blogosphere is surely slow due to everyone else being on Safari.

An Ortega, an Alec Bradley and A Special Cain Cigar

Have you ever heard about a new cigar and, sight unseen, knew you’d love it?  When I heard Eddie Ortega of EO Brands/601, Murcielago, etc., was striking out on his own, and I knew he loves the Murcielago, and I love the Murcialago. I had a strong suspicion that his new cigar, the Ortega Serie D would be right up my alley.  Of course, I adore a San Andreas wrapper, and the Serie D has that wrapper!  I love a nice corona gorda, whattaya know, there’s a corona gorda!  While I was at the cigar shop on Saturday I picked up a couple of the Serie D finally, and fired up a No.7 after a nice day out with my wife having dinner at a friends house.  Obviously, I had built this cigar up in my mind pretty well, which can be a recipe for disaster.  No such luck here, it was a fantastic cigar.  Well made, beautiful maduro wrapper and D-licious!  I have a No. 12 that I got at the same time, looking forward to smoking that one too.  Eddie has a real winner here, but I never doubted that!

Monday evening I had to pick up one of the cars from the shop, so my oldest son and I decided to walk to the shop and took some Alec Bradley New York cigars with us that we had picked up at De La Concha on a visit last year.  I smoked the “Gotham” torpedo and my son had the “six two” robusto. These are only available from New York State retailers.  I don’t usually like a Criollo wrapper much, but this one was tasty, and it was a reasonably strong cigar.  It was pretty tasty and it lasted the entire 3 mile walk to the garage.  I picked up some of the other New York State specific cigars at the time, a Gurkha and a La Aurora, and I think this was my favorite.  Unfortunately, it’s tough to justify buying cigars in New York if I can help it, but having something exclusive like this makes it difficult to pass up. Nice cigar, try one if you have the opportunity.

Tuesday evening I broke down and grabbed one of those special cigars that you look at every time you open the humidor, but find a reason to save it for a special occasion or something.  I finally said “screw it” and selected a Cain Daytona Lancero which was gifted to my by my friend and local Oliva rep, Mike Staiber, last year at the IPCPR show.  I really enjoy the Daytona line, I find it milder than the Habano, Maduro and “F” lines, and well balanced.  This lancero was no different. I always feel a little fancy smoking a lancero, it’s an elegant size.  Unfortunately, it’s not a real popular size, but it’s one I really enjoy as long as I take my time and “sip” the smoke from it so it doesn’t get too hot.  Absolutely fantastic cigar, among the best I’ve had recently.  Fortunately I have another one floating around, as well as an “F” lancero or two.  I understand the Daytona lancero is available now in the special Studio Tabak sampler that is available at their store events.  I’ve liked the flavor of all the Cains I’ve smoked, but some are just too darned strong for me.  The Daytona solves this problem by giving me that great flavor in a friendlier package.  Very nice!

It’s a short one this time.  Memorial Day is just about upon us!  I hope everyone can squeeze in a few great cigars over the weekend!

Until the next time,

C&C Cigars, Joya De Nicaragua, a Visit with Nish Patel, Xen, Thunder and News

You may recall earlier in the week I was in a quandary: smoke something rare and expensive and risk disappointment or go cheap and reliable. Wednesday I decided to do a little of both and try out another fairly new, inexpensive smoke.  I was at my local shop a couple weeks ago and came across a three cigar robusto sampler of the C&C Cigars, from the folks that used to be Cusano.  The sampler was $9.95 and contained a Corojo, a Connecticut and a Maduro. As is my normal pattern, I headed straight for the Maduro and I wasn’t disappointed.  What a tasty, well made cigar!  Burn was perfect, it had a nice balance of smooth, dark flavors and was a pleasure to smoke.  It burned very slowly, which was a plus as well.  For $3.32 each, this is a real winner.  Keep any eye out for my thoughts on the other two, as I don’t see being able to keep my hands off them for too long!

The end of the week called for a sure thing, and what better than a Joya de Nicaragua Antaño Dark Corojo.  This particular cigar came from a goodie bag from a blogger party that Drew Estate put on at last years IPCPR show, which probably explains why its a size that isn’t listed in their regular product line.  This box pressed cigar measured 6″ x 48 by my figuring (it’s hard to get a good read on a square cigar with a round ring gauge checker.  It’s a great cigar size, and had a beautiful dark wrapper.  I love this line.  I remember smoking one of these in the Joya de Nicaragua factory last year and having to put it down because the combination of heat and humidity in the factory and a strong-ass cigar was conspiring against me.  This was a strong-ass cigar also, but burned well and tasted great, one to try if you like them strong.  Maybe I’m getting old, or maturing or something, but I’m finding more of an appreciation for the mild-medium cigars recently. I’ll have to keep an eye on that.

The Hoyo de Monterrey Reposado en Cedros is a tasty smoke, so make sure you put your name in the hat to win a box!

Saturday afternoon Old Havana Cigars Co. in West Chester, PA had a Rocky Patel event featuring a visit by Nish Patel so I took a ride down to have a cigar.  I grabbed a couple of Xen Short Robustos and a couple Thunder by Nimish Robustos and smoked a Xen while I was there.  The Xen is unique because it has an Ecuador Connecticut wrapper but it’s square pressed.  It’s very difficult to make a pressed cigar with a Connecticut wrapper because it’s so thin.  They manage this, I believe, using a double binder.  I really enjoyed the cigar, it had what Nish refers to as “attitude”.  It’s not a mild cigar at all, it’s got a nice little punch to it, along with the flavor from the wrapper.  It was a very nice cigar.  Later, after dinner, I took a Thunder by Nimish Robusto to the front porch.  My son just got a dog, so she sat on the porch with me while I enjoyed this hefty robusto.  It has a nice curly pigtail cap and a dark Habano wrapper.  It had nice, dark, savory flavors. I think this is a nice cigar for someone who likes strong cigars, and I generally do.  Two very different blends, and two very rich, satisfying cigars.  Nish is a very nice guy, and it’s always a pleasure seeing Mark, our local Rocky Patel sales rep.  Old Havana Cigar Co. always has very busy events and despite it being a beautiful Saturday, they had a ton of traffic.

That’s it for now, and it was a lot!  I probably should have held something back for Wednesday when I’ll be looking for material!  I suppose I’ll have to smoke some more cigars between now and then…

Until the next time,

CigarCraig
