The Tale of Two Archetype Axis Mundis and News: Ventura Rolling Event at Rocky Mountain Cigar Festival

I’m going to tie these two things together, because they are directly related!  Last month I had the pleasure of attending Michael Giannini’s rolling event at the PA Barnsmoker, and I applied the wrapper on an Archetype Axis Mundi toro. To be honest, Henry from Drew Estate jumped in and over my protestations, helped a little more than I would have liked, not understanding that I had done this before and really wanted to just have advice and not as much help. I didn’t want to be rude and say “dude, back off”, but I did make remarks like, “sorry, I haven’t done this since Willy showed me in 2013”.  Anyway, I applied the wrapper and it came out pretty good, but it wouldn’t win any beauty contests. I struggled throughout the process to figure out which side of the leaf was the outside and which was the inside. Yesterday I decided to smoke the cigar and see how it was, and follow it up with the production version to compare. I watched a movie on the porch and smoked the cigar I “rolled”, and I enjoyed it a lot. The burn and draw were perfect, although it burned faster than I would have liked, although, now that I look up the running time of the movie, it did burn for an hour and forty-five minutes, so it didn’t burn that fast. It tasted great, just like the production Axis Mundi I smoked later in the evening. I have to say, I liked the draw on the one I rolled better than the production version, it was more easy and open, and the regular version had a firm draw, and needed a few relights. It was a humid day yesterday, so it’s hard to knock a cigar when the ambient conditions aren’t optimal. These have a nice espresso flavor with a tangy spice, very nice cigars made at Drew Estate, hence their presence at the Barnsmokers. The Toro is 6″ x 52, although my version seemed a tad fatter. It was a fun experiment, and who can argue smoking two great cigars in one day!

If you happen to be in Colorado Saturday, I’d encourage you to go to the Rocky Mountain Cigar Festival. I attended this event back in 2014 and it was a fantastic event.  There are going to be a ton of great folks there, and Michael Giannini will be doing a rolling event as well (see below). RMCF is really one of the great events in the country, I’m fortunate to have attended and would love to go back to that beautiful area.

News:

Ventura Cigar is Rolling into the Rocky Mountain Cigar Festival

Michael Giannini to Host rolling event at this year’s festivities

Bringing their signature unconventional approach to their cigars, Ventura Cigar Company will be hosting a cigar rolling event at this year’s Rocky Mountain Cigar Festival. Held on August 24, 2019 in Broomfield, Colorado, the Rocky Mountain Cigar festival brings together aficionados of spirits, cigars, wines, and food, with a full day of sampling, music, games, and activities. It’s an ideal setting for Ventura Cigar Company to showcase products with attendees, but they’ve decided to take it to the next level by holding a rolling event to share the craft behind their blends. Led by Michael Giannini, industry icon and General Manager for Ventura Cigar Company, the rolling event is expected to draw several hundred people, offering a hands-on approach to cigars.

Guests of the rolling event will be treated to a VIP experience, as they roll their own Axis Mundi cigars, a popular blend from Ventura Cigar Company’s popular Archetype brand.

“Sometimes, to really appreciate the experience, you have to get your hands dirty,” says Giannini. “It’s not enough to simply smoke a cigar. To really savor it, really understand it, you have to know the backstory. We’re giving people a chance to be part of the backstory. To roll the cigar themselves, engage in the process of creation, and then truly enjoy the smoke. It’s going to be great, and I’m excited to be a part of it.”

News: Ventura Cigars Announces Cuban CigarFactory Blends

Is this one of the last news items before the IPCPR show? I kinda doubt it, but here it is, none the less. This is an interesting project with Ventura and Manuel Quesada and Benji Menendez. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting both of these gentlemen, rue legends in the cigar game.

INSPIRED BY THE OLD WORLD, CREATED FOR THE NEW
VENTURA CIGAR COMPANY TO LAUNCH 2 BLENDS CREATED BY MASTERS FOR CUBAN CIGAR FACTORY BRAND.

“Hide not your talents. They for use were made. What’s a sundial in the shade?” (Benjamin Franklin)

Benjamin “Benji” Menendez and Manuel “Manolo” Quesada: two of the greatest of all time. Cigar industry pioneers, builders, blenders, visionaries, creators, and friends. True legends of the business, Menendez and Quesada are teaming up for the first time in an exciting new passion project from Michael Giannini and Ventura Cigar Company (VCC). Led by their longtime friend, Giannini, Menendez and Quesada have each collaborated on a namesake blend for Cuban Cigar Factory. A celebration of tradition and talent, this collaboration for Ventura Cigar Company’s Cuban Cigar Factory is bringing the importance of Old-World Cuban expat expertise to the palates of the present and generations to come.

Behind the Blends
Benji Menendez enjoyed an early beginning in the Cuban tobacco business at his father’s factory. Forced to leave his home and livelihood when Castro came to power, Menendez had to start completely over. However, as a seeker of opportunity and a purveyor of fine tobacco, he soon established a new foothold, becoming a mastermind behind cigars and factories in nearly every cigar-making country. His career has been legendary, working in 8 different countries to produce some of the best cigars to hit the
market. “I still think about the cigar factory every day of my life,” says Benji Menendez.

The Benji Menendez for Cuban Cigar Factory: available in a Robusto, Toro, and Belicoso, a rich, silky smooth blend featuring a Dominican binder, Dominican and Nicaraguan fillers, and a Connecticut Ecuadorian wrapper.

Manolo Quesada is a fourth-generation master from a lineage of tobacco growers, brokers, and blenders that stretch back over a century. His career began in pre-Castro Cuba, where he first developed a taste for the intricacies of tobacco at his father’s company. Also forced to leave Cuba by Castro’s rise to power, Quesada went to the Dominican Republic, where he founded MATASA in 1972, from the humble beginnings of a chair, a phone, three rollers, and $100. Over the decades, MATASA has flourished under Quesada’s intuitive, expert eye for quality and flavor, making his knowledge for the past and present a natural fit for the Cuban Cigar Factory project.

The Manolo Quesada for Cuban Cigar Factory: available in a Robusto, Toro, and Belicoso, a rich and savory blend featuring an Ecuadorian binder, Dominican fillers, and a Habano Ecuador wrapper.

“I feel like I’m a Rick Rubin of the cigar industry,” says Michael Giannini, General Manager at Ventura Cigar. “I’m bringing people together- people who I admire, my great friends who laid the foundation of the cigar industry, and people of the next generation. The creators and the consumers. Everyone has something to offer. We have a duty to engage this talent, not to let these great minds and their priceless knowledge fade away. They’re now our mentors, an inspiration to us all, and they’re still here. They’re still on the court, so let’s play ball. Let’s show everyone what we can do.”

Both Cuban Cigar Factory cigars are created at the MATASA factory in the Dominican Republic, in
collaboration with Ventura Cigar Company. They are set to debut at IPCPR 2019, and are planned for a
late summer ship date. The Benji Menendez and Manolo Quesada blends will each be available as
follows:

Robusto: 5″x50, $12.99 each or $259.98 for a box of 20
Toro: 6″x50, $13.99 each or $279.98 for a box of 20
Belicoso: 6.25″x52, $14.49 each, or $289.98 for a box of 20

News: New Tommy Bahama Collection Set to Launch

More news from my friends at Ventura and Island Lifestyle. I regularly use my Tommy Bahama cutter and lighters, and travel humidor, and they are all quality pieces, and the new finishes sure look sharp!

Distributed by Ventura Cigars, New Tommy Bahama Collection Set to Launch at IPCPR 2019

In partnership with Island Lifestyle Importers, Ventura Cigar Company is announcing the arrival of the “Hula Paradise Collection” from Tommy Bahama’s cigar accessories collection. The collection will premiere at this year’s International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers (IPCPR) Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Anchoring the new collection is the limited release Hula Paradise “Just Another Day in Paradise” Humidor- a striking mahogany wood humidor with a three-dimensional metal inlay that wraps around its top three sides, and is reminiscent of a premium cigar band. It also features a Tommy Bahama Hula Girl strumming a ukulele within the center of the artwork. The humidor is both a conversation-piece and a storage necessity, storing up to 50 cigars and including internal humidification and a hygrometer. The MSRP is $175.

The “Hula Paradise” collection also includes a tabletop quad-torch cigar lighter ($99.95), a portable dual-torch cigar lighter ($85.00), a metal cigar cutter ($75.00), and a 610 travel cigar humidor ($40.00). The lighters and cutters feature the exclusive Accu-Body-Cast-Design (ABCD) made to highlight the exclusive Tommy Bahama artwork. The 610 travel cigar humidor is a crush-resistant, air-tight, water-proof, floating case that will accommodate six Churchill or ten Robusto-sized cigars.

“This new collection has such a great vibe,” says Michael Giannini, General Manager for Ventura Cigars. “It brings the party to the gathering and inspires people to slow down and make time to enjoy the good life. Which, of course, includes a cigar or two. Come by our booth at IPCPR and check it all out.”

Island Lifestyle Importers is the exclusive designer, manufacturer, and world-wide licensee of Tommy Bahama branded luxury cigar accessories, which are known for their innovative designs, cutting-edge technology, and island theme-inspired artwork.

Ventura Cigar Company and Phillips & King International are the exclusive wholesale distributors of these new products, as well as the entire Tommy Bahama brand of cigar accessories, also providing wholesale marketing support for the brand. Ventura Cigar Company and Phillips & King are wholly owned subsidiaries of Kretek International. Tommy Bahama Luxury Cigar Accessories will be displayed and available for purchase in the Ventura Cigar Company booth (Booth #818) at this year’s IPCPR show.

News: Ventura Cigar Company Announces Archetype Chapter 3

Today’s news is from Ventura Cigar Company.  Michal Giannini and Ernesto Carirllo have a long history together going back to La Gloria Cubana days, I still have one of their “ReUnited” colaborations in a humidor someplace.

ARCHETYPE CHAPTER 3: THE LEGEND CONTINUES

TWO NEW BLENDS SET TO DEBUT AT IPCPR 2019.

Ventura Cigar Company (VCC) announced today the addition of Chapter 3 to its Archetype Cigars story, with two new tobacco blends set to release in June at IPCPR 2019. These unique cigars, named Sacred Scales and Dawn of Destiny, are crafted by Cigar Master Ernesto Perez-Carrillo in his award-winning factory in the Dominican Republic. Perez-Carrillo and Michael Giannini, General Manager at Ventura Cigar, have a unique friendship which spans over the last 20 years, crossing paths at different points in their career journeys. Archetype Chapter 3 is a celebration that marks their 3 rd cigar collaboration, and the beginning of a new phase in the Archetype story, and in their story as icons in the cigar industry. Attendees of IPCPR will be among the first to try the new Archetype Chapter 3 blends and bring them into their store’s inventory. Inspired by the work of psychologist Dr. Carl Jung and mythographer Joseph Campbell, Archetype Cigars herald the Hero’s Journey, a common storytelling arc that has been shared across cultures, space and time.

Chapter 3’s Sacred Scales, marks the inflection point in this journey, beginning the hero’s return to the real world from the imaginary. This full-bodied, full-flavored cigar offers a rich, signature Ernesto Perez- Carrillo smoking experience, featuring a San Andres Maduro wrapper from Mexico, an Ecuadorian binder, and filler tobaccos from Nicaragua. Sacred Scales will be available in a 5 x 50 Robusto, 6 x 52 Toro, and 6 x 60 Gordo.

Dawn of Destiny represents the hero’s return to reality as it travels across the threshold of flavor. A medium-full-bodied blend, this Perez-Carrillo-crafted cigar features a smooth wrapper from Ecuador, which surrounds a binder and filler tobaccos from Nicaragua. Dawn of Destiny will be available in a 5 x 50 Robusto, 6 x 52 Toro, and 6 x 60 Gordo.

“Ernesto Perez-Carrillo is one-of-a-kind,” says Michael Giannini, General Manager for Ventura Cigars. “He and I go way back. We are champions of each other’s work in the cigar industry, and creative collaborators at points along the way. It made sense for us to team up and begin this new chapter of Archetype, forging a new path in its story, and celebrating a new phase in our careers. Ernesto’s a master crafter, as a creator of blends that treat the cigar smoker to an evolving flavor experience. Chapter 3 is going to be an exciting one for all of us- I just know it.” The overarching Archetype experience ventures through the top-rated cigars Dreamstate, Sage Advice, Strange Passage, Initiation, and Axis Mundi. And in Fall 2018, the Archetype Mini-Series added a 3-cigar side quest with Crystals, Curses, and Cloaks.
