Espinosa Hush Money, Exactus Cigars, Flor de Cesar, and a Rant

Before I get to the cigars, I feel the need to bring up an incident that happened at a local cigar shop, one of the brick and mortar outlets of Cigars International in Bethlehem, PA. I’ve been to this location several times. I encourage you to watch the Philadelphia NBC affiliate’s video, which had surveillance camera footage of the incident (linked). Whatever your thoughts on the matter, Pennsylvania mandates that masks be worn outside of the home, business have a mandate to require masks, and signs are posted. In my mind it’s a very simple thing, if you have a problem wearing a mask, don’t go someplace that requires you to wear a mask. Most places provide accomodations, and CI has such accommodations, ie. curbside service. Friday this person went into the Bethlehem Superstore sans mask, was told he needed a mask, was indignant, walked out with two cigars, was followed out by an employee (who, I’m under the understanding, was a retired military or law enforcement officer, obviously unarmed) with the intention of collecting information to report the theft to the police. The guy went to his car, returned with a gun and took shots at the employee (this can be seen in the video), it’s a miracle he wasn’t hit or worse, then left. Saturday he was apprehended after a shootout with police (link to story here). It cannot be argued that he went to the store with the intention of stealing cigars, I believe he went to buy cigars. It astounds me that people are so unwilling to change one little thing to get along in an unusual situation that they risk their life to defend their “rights”. It’s such a small thing to ask, isn’t it? Even if it weren’t a state mandate, if it were an matter of private property rights, if it was my private business, and I required a mask, who the hell are you to demand that your rights supersede mine? Nobody thinks twice about “no shoes, no shirt, no service” right? Why is this different? OK, I’ve left myself open for enough criticism. Wear a mask, don’t wear a mask, if you choose not to wear a mask and tell me if I’m so afraid to stay home, do me a favor, you stay home, rights go both ways.

OK, cigars. Of course, I smoked a bunch this week. My man Adam was very kind and sent me a few cigars, once he and his family get settled after their move I’ll respond in some way. It’s fun to share cigars with them because his wife loves cigars too! Anyway, he sent me an Espinosa Hush Money Churchill, I cigar with which I was not familiar. I’m guessing this is a Famous Smoke Shop exclusive, from the limited research I did. The cigar was a Churchill size, 7″ x 50, which is a size I’m quite comfortable with on a nice summer day. I have a vast collection of robustos, and anymore I just find them too short for my liking. I try to amass toros and better for my daily consumption. I suppose it’s a luxury to have the time to enjoy an hour and a half or more with a cigar. Anyway, Famous Smoke doesn’t list much information about this except that it’s Nicaraguan and Maduro, and it’s on the lighter side of maduro (I wouldn’t have guessed based on color or flavor, honestly, I would have said Habano). It started out a little harsh, and I wondered what Adam had set me up for, but after the first half inch it settled down and I spent the next 90 minutes really enjoying a nice, sweet ride. It burned very well, and was a very enjoyable cigar, and for around $5 when bought by the bundle (10), quite a deal. Thank you to Adam for sharing this with me, I can see why you like this so much!

El Artista Cigars was a long time advertiser here, and I spent some time with Ram and Kevin at the TPE show last January. They make some great cigars, I really like the Buffalo Ten (and I know that Adam does too), and they make the Big Papi as well as Pulita that are excellent. When I first took them on as an advertiser I bought a handful of their cigars to try out, I always like to have a personal connection with companies that I present on my site. I don’t feel right having ads on my page that I can’t get behind myself. you can rest assured that every company represented on my page has been personally vetted by me and carries my seal of approval. As great as a relationship as I have with the folks at El Artista, I wasn’t able to provide them with what they were looking for this year, so we took a break, but I still dig their cigars, and they are great folks. I found a lonely old Exactus Maduro Toro in the humidor and decided to take it for a spin. This cigar has an Ecuador HBA wrapper, and I don’t know what HBA stands for (HVA I know, but HBA, not a clue). The binder is a Dominican wine fermented Criollo 98, and the filler is Dominican. The cigar had nice, dark dried fruit and espresso flavors, and the most impressive thing about it was that it burned forever! I must have spent darned near three hours smoking this 6″ x 50 toro. Granted, I had to relight it a few times, but it was a slow burner. It had been in my humidor for a few years too, maybe five or six? I lose track of time. I wish I had more. They make this in the Super Coloso, which is 11″ x 90, I wonder how long that would burn?

Finally, I was watching some NHL yesterday and lit up a Flor de Cesar Gold Robusto that I. should have smoked last year sometime. This is from a 2019 batch made at Oveja Negra in Esteli. Flor de Cesar is, more or less, the house brand of BnB Cigars in Chestnut Hill (Philadelphia) PA. It has a rosado Brazilian Matafina wrapper, Ecuador binder and fillers from Nicaragua, Brazil and the Dominican Republic. BnB is a great shop, loaded to the ceiling with great cigars. You never know what, or who, you might find there. It’s a must visit if you find yourself in Philly. This cigar might have been the highlight of my week, cigar-wise. The depth of flavor was exceptional, and very clean on the palate. It had a nice earthy sweetness. I just found it to be extremely flavorful, delicious, and satisfying. it made me want to dig out something else from Oveja Negra later, sadly I got distracted and opted for my last CroMagnon Cranium. The Flor de Cesar Gold was tremendous.

I think I’m going to try to set up the projector on the porch and watch the Flyers on the big screen, and tomorrow I’m going to Goose’s Golf outing. It occurs to me that I haven’t been to a cigar event, or even to a cigar shop, since February or March, which is pretty strange. Full report on that to follow. Watch my social media feeds for photos and video. That’s all for today, until the next time,

A Nova Limited Edition Platinum Torpedo and a Buffalo Ten Cigar

The first order of business involves a website problem I’ve been having, and I have to think it’s had an impact on the low number of contest entries! I’m working on getting it resolved, but if you get a notification pop-up like pictured here, click DENY! If you clicked allow and are getting weird notifications, go to your browser preferences and reset the settings. In Chrome this is preferences>advanced>reset settings. You may have to log in to a few things, but it will get rid of the annoying notifications. I think I know where this came from, but I’m rather hesitant to go back and look, if you know what I mean. It was a cigar manufacturers website, before you make any assumptions!  Anyway, I’m working tirelessly to get this fixed without paying an exorbitant ransom. The advise I got from the WordPress community was general, and the first scanning plugin told me I had malicious files, but not what the files were and it would be $249 to fix it. I can delete files if only I know what they are! Anyway, I’m working on it and will get it figured out. This also seems to be affecting the RSS feed somehow, so the e-mails aren’t going out.  All very frustrating. I’ll have to have a cigar to calm down.

One of the cigars I smoked this week was a cigar I got at the TPE show from a company with whom I was previously unfamiliar. I was introduced to Ari and Leonor, the principles of the company (principals? I’m never sure…they are the ones in charge) and they told me their story of how they both worked at Nat Sherman in Manhattan, and split off to start Nova Cigars. For a new brand, they have a very large range, I count 16 frontmarks. Now, it’s not like they have several sizes in each line, every line is a unique size and blend, and each one has a secondary band with the name of the marque. They also are not inexpensive, with their “value” line starting in the $9 range, and the premium offerings running over $30. They were very generous with the samples, and I selected one of the $30 Nova Platinum Limited Edition Torpedos for my evening smoke on Thursday. This is a 5½” x 55 torpedo with a Habano 2000 wrapper and Dominican binder and fillers made in their own factory in the Dominican Republic. They stressed their commitment to quality, which should be a given at the premium price points. I’m quite certain my readers know that I’m not one to spend that kind of money on a cigar, especially something new to the market. To be honest, I have. hell of a time spending $17 on a Sin Compromiso and I know that’s a great cigar (although, also relatively new to the market also, butI know it’s provenance). So I had some expectations, and I had smoked a Sultan at the show, and it was very good. This cigar was very different, not only from he Sultan, but from just about any other cigar I’ve smoked. It had a unique flavor, almost like Christmas cookies! But it changed from time to time, and remained entertaining. The construction was without flaw, and it certainly was an exceptional smoke. I greatly anticipate meandering my way though the other samples I came home from the TPE show with, and am quite pleased that I made friends with the folks at Nova Cigars! I really enjoyed my time talking to Leo and Ari, and hope to see them again.

In a relative 180° turn from the Nova, I decided to smoke a less expensive cigar that I also smoked at the TPE and really enjoyed. I’ve seen friends smoking the Buffalo Ten and certainly posted the press release back in June when El Artista announced the release. This is a really cool cigar, it’s a 6″ x 50 box pressed cigar and sells in paper wrapped five packs or boxes of 40. It has a San Andrés wrapper, Dominican Negrito binder and fillers from Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Columbia and right down the road from me here in Pennsylvania. This is a really flavorful cigar, and you know that because it says so on the band! Fun fact: the European version of this does not have the word “Flavorful” on the band! Apparently they thought it meant flavored and they have a flavored cigar ban in Europe, or are taxed differently or something, so they have different bands. If it were me I would have just left the word off all of the bands and had one band, but it’s not me. I can’t argue with the cigar being flavorful! I really like this cigar because it’s different from other San Andrés wrapped cigars. It has a more savory, meaty flavor than the standard earthy, coffee that I really love, by the way. It’s a really comfortable shape, it’s a tasty smoke, and the price hovers in the $4 range if you live in the right place and can buy more than a few at a time! I have smoked a lot of El Artista’s cigars, I think this might be my favorite. This comes highly recommended as a value cigar.

That’s all I have for now, back to trying to figure out how to clean up the mess on my webserver.  Until the next time,

News: El Artista Announces David Ortiz’ “The Slugger” Cigar Brand

Here’s some Thursday news from the folks at El Artista:

EL ARTISTA ANNOUNCES THE LAUNCH OF A NEW CIGAR BRAND

EL Artista Cigars announces a new line extension for the David Ortiz line of cigars. “David’s brand recognition is growing across many of his projects,” states Radhames ‘Ram’ Rodriguez, President of El Artista Cigars, “and over the last 3 years we have seen good growth in the Big Papi cigar line and we want cigar fans to have something new”.

Titled “The Slugger” after Ortiz’s signature Home Run style, the new brand is stronger and larger than its predecessor. The new blend features a stippled deep brown San Andres maduro wrapper, flavorful Dominican Negrito binder, and fillers from Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and US. In contrast to the first Ortiz Project, Big Papi, which was a medium blend, The Slugger includes several ligero tobaccos for a noticeably stronger smoke.

Developed by El Artista Cigars in conjunction with Ortiz, the blend was created as a response to Big Papi fan and retailer requests, “We have hosted dozens of events with Big Papi since 2016 and gathered a lot of feedback from fans about what the next blend should be like.” Says Kevin Newman Director of Sales & Marketing for El Artista Cigars, “Our Big Papi fans asked us to increase the power for the next blend; we not only increased the strength but made a bigger cigar packed with even more flavor”. At a recent press conference David Ortiz quipped: “I wanted a cigar size that better fits in my big hands, something that is big like me”.

The Slugger comes in one size: Gordo XL, 60×7”. Fans of the original Big Papi blend will recognize the handsome red and white Big Papi band on The Slugger, which is adorned with a contrasting navy-blue foot ribbon. Twenty cigars come in a beautiful blue and white piano-finished box. Retail priced at $12.50 per cigar.

World-wide launch of “The Slugger” is set for the 87th Annual IPCPR Trade Show in Las Vegas and El Artista expects to ship orders starting the second week of July, 2019.

News: El Artista Announces Launch of Buffalo TEN Cigars

We’re starting the week off with an announcement from El Artista Cigars.  This looks like one I’ll like, the size is right and I dig a San Andrés wrapper!

EL ARTISTA ANNOUNCES THE LAUNCH OF A NEW CIGAR BRAND

El Artista Cigars announces the launch of a new cigar brand for 2019: Buffalo TEN. “We feel this is the beginning of a great flagship product line for us,” says Radhames ‘Ram’ Rodriguez, President of El Artista Cigars, “not only does it smoke great but the whole package looks amazing. We have developed something that we feel cannot be beat”.

With a suggested retail price of $4.50 per cigar, the new cigar brand is an everyday smoke with a blend unparalleled in taste and variety of tobaccos. “Buffalo TEN truly demonstrates the strengths of El Artista,” says Kevin Newman, Director of Sales & Marketing, “the factory team worked with us to source some of the best tobaccos available and integrate a few factory-exclusives for a phenomenal blend at an incredible price”.

Buffalo TEN is available in one size, a soft box pressed 6×50 Toro, and El Artista offers it in two retail packages, as an attractive 5-Pack ($22.50 MSRP) in a wooden retail shelf display that holds five 5-packs or as a single-stick purchase ($4.95 MSRP) from a 40-ct retail bundle tray. “We are experimenting with Buffalo TEN in terms of packaging options and a great low price point that we feel is attractive to both consumers and the brick & mortar retailer,” states Ram.

Buffalo TEN is a complex blend composed of six different tobaccos from across The Americas and Caribbean. Buffalo TEN features a toothy Mexican San Andres maduro wrapper and a rich Dominican Negrito binder. The filler blend is sourced from USA, Colombia, and the company’s own fields in the Dominican Republic. Two tobaccos are exclusive to El Artista: Dominican T-13 Hybrid found in the filler and the Dominican Negrito binder.

Buffalo TEN will be available for sale to retailers in North America at the 87th Annual IPCPR Trade Show in Las Vegas starting June 29, 2019 and will ship the second week of July 2019.

Big Papi Humidor Contest Winner Announcement!

I got a bit busy over the last couple of days, and didn’t get around to selecting a winner in the Big Papi Humidor contest sponsored by El Artista Cigars. So I’m going to just go ahead and do it tonight! It’s appropriate, since the Red Sox are the World Series Champions, although it still is a really special humidor any way you look at it!  So I once again consulted  the random number generator at Random.org and it gave me the number 14.  I went back to the contest post and counted to the 14th comment and it was Matt Hopper.  Let me go back and double check…this is an important thing, not to be taken lightly. Yup, I checked and Matt Hopper is the winner!  Matt needs to e-mail me his contact information so I can pass it on to El Artista cigars so they can ship this beautiful humidor to him so he can celebrate the Red Sox World Series victory by (hopefully) filing it up with all his Big Papi cigars!

That’s three great contests in a row, sorry to say there isn’t a fourth right now, but stay tuned, you never know what may happen!  I have been smoking a few good cigars this week so watch for the regular Sunday recap coming up…er….Sunday! Until then,

CigarCraig
