News: Joya de Nicaragua Launches TAA Retailer Exclusive Cuatro Cinco Edición Americana

I got behind on some news items this week , so I’m going to post a few on this rainy Saturday. This is one from Joya. This is one of my favorite blends from them. Typically TAA exclusives aren’t all that exciting to me, but this one has potential. I’m to understand that only 5000 cigars are being made available in this release. I’m going to have to get my hands on a few.  

 

Since its founding in 1968 as the first premium cigar company in Nicaragua, Joya de Nicaragua has enjoyed strong ties with American cigar lovers and their retailers. During the administration of Richard M. Nixon, Joya de Nicaragua’s Clásico was even the official cigar distributed to guests attending functions at the White House. In 2021, the United States continues to be one of Joya de Nicaragua’s most important markets and the company is celebrating its strong ties to America by releasing Cuatro Cinco Edición Americana, the second regional edition of its legendary Cuatro Cinco cigars, which will be available exclusively at Tobacconist Association of America (TAA) member retailers.

 

 

Since its original release to celebrate Joya de Nicaragua’s 45th anniversary in 2013, the limited edition Cuatro Cinco cigar has been one of Joya de Nicaragua’s most popular cigars and it has consistently been one of the company’s highest rated cigars as well. The highly acclaimed blend features a Nicaraguan Criollo wrapper and select Grade A Nicaraguan filler tobaccos. The finished cigars are aged inside vintage white oak barrels that were used by a world-renown rum distillery for at least one year. The Cuatro Cinco Edición Americana TAA Exclusive is a 6 x 54 Belicoso.

 

“When we were deciding what the next TAA product should be, we knew it had to be special,” says Joya de Nicaragua’s Executive President, Juan Ignacio Martinez. “When the team proposed the Belicoso, the decision was made, there’s no other vitola in the Cuatro Cinco family that smokes closer to the original limited edition than this one.”

 

Cuatro Cinco Edición Americana TAA Exclusive is limited to 500 10-count boxes and features special artwork incorporating a bald eagle in the company’s logo on the box, as well as a second band on the foot denoting it as a TAA exclusive cigar.

 

“These are some of the best cigars that come out of our factory,” says Daniel Barrios, Joya de Nicaragua’s Global Commercial Manager. “The stories we tell with them need to be special. We have selected the bald eagle because of what it represents to our American friends, an example of stamina, power and freedom. In 2021, JDN is celebrating Nicaragua’s independence bicentennial, and what a better symbol to connect us both than the symbol of freedom.”

 

The Cuatro Cinco Edición Americana TAA Exclusive was formally presented to the trade during the TAA Virtual Conference on March 23rd and it is now being shipped to TAA retailers.

Joya de Nicaragua Cinco Decadas, Antańo 1970 and Quatro Cinco Cigars

I decided to go on a bit of a bender on some cigars from one of my favorite cigar factories. No, not that one, I’m talking about Joya de Nicaragua. Joya de Nicaragua was actually the first real factory I really had the pleasure of touring. It was early in 2011, coming up on ten years ago. I walked in smoking one of my favorites, an Antańo Dark Corojo El Martillo. It was really hot and I was nearing the band and ended up putting the cigar down as I felt some feelings coming on and the last thing I wanted was to get a case of the nicotine sweats there. It was there that I saw them rolling the Cabinettas, and Jonathan Drew had introduced us to the brand new #13 Lancero the night before, still a favorite of mine. I have a sentimental attachment to the brand, and it help that I love the cigars the make, there are very few that I won’t smoke. This extends to cigar they make for other people as well, of course. So I’m more than grateful when they share some of the great cigars they make with me. This is especially true in the case of the Cinco Decadas El Doctor. This is named for the owner of the company, Dr. Alejandro Martinez Cuenca, who I met at the IPCPR show in 2011. This is a 6″ x 52 torpedo with a box press. The Cinco Decadas line is unlike some of the more popular cigars in the JdN portfolio. It isn’t the powerhouse Nicaraguan that they are famous for, it’s refined and elegant. There are some sweet spices and nutiness involved in the flavor. I think these are wonderful cigars. If you want a hint of what these are like on a budget, give the Joya Silver a try, there are similarities.

 

I went back to the Joya de Nicaragua Antaño 1970 yesterday afternoon in the Robusto Grande size and was, as usual, delighted. I vacillate between this 5½ x 52 and the Gran Consul size being my favorite size, although I think I’ve smoked a fair number of Consuls over the years. Oddly, I don’t think I’ve smoked the Toro in this line! Weird. The Robusto Grande is close enough, and it’s a great cigar. It’s full bodied, it’s got the pepper and coffee that I like, and it’s completely satisfying. This is another one of my long time favorite cigars. 

 

Last night I came across a Quatro Cinco Torpedo in the humidor. I think this was my last Quatro Cinco, unless there’s another one hidden someplace. This line precedes the Cinco Decadas by five years, it was the 45th anniversary celebration cigar. I’m not sure if there’s something significant about celebrating an odd numbered anniversary or what, maybe they were afraid that FDA regulations would screw up the 50th? The Quatro Cinco to me shares more of the DNA of the Antaño Dark Corojo. It’s a full bodied cigar with espresso and spice, but more refined. Perhaps it has longer aged or vintage tobacco, and uses a Barrel aging process on some of the leaves. Perhaps today I’ll smoke a Cabinetta, it’s been a while!

A Recluse, A Johnny Tobacconaut and a Joya de Nicaragua Cigar

It seems like the last few days I’ve been reaching for Figurados for some reason, I think five of the last eight cigars I’ve smoked were shaped cigars in one way or another. I don’t know why that’s significant, it probably isn’t, it just happened to be what I grabbed. None of the cigars featured here are new appearances on this site. I craved some Recluse_OTG_Kanu1favorites this week, what can I say. I’ve had a couple Recluse OTG Kanu #1 in the humidor for three or four years, I figured Wednesday was a good day to smoke one of these.  The Kanu #1 is a cool 6″ x 54 box pressed perfecto, styled after a Kayak.  It has a little “bun” pigtail cap that easily pinches off so you don’t have to cut it. I don;t know if this is a case anymore, but originally the larger sizes (the #2 is 7″ x 52 and the #3 is 8 x 58) had little o-rings or something on the head of the cigar telling you where to cut, because the recommended cutting them a little higher to get thee best draw. The #1, withe the pigtail pinched off had a perfect draw. The OTG line has a Brazilian maduro wrapper, Cameroon binder and Dominican fillers. I happen to be a fan of maduro over Cameroon, so I’ve been a fan of this line since it came out in 2012.  It had a great bittersweet cocoa flavor with a little bit of spice. The Recluse line in general has been very good, I can’t recall a single cigar in their line-up that I didn’t really, really like. They are innovative and patient in their approach, and word on the street is that they will be releasing a TON of new sizes and line extensions at the show. It’s criminal that the FDA has companies like this in their cross hairs.

 

Room101_JohnnyTobacconaut_Ranflactic(1)Friday I decided to wrap up the week with a Room 101 Johnny Tobacconaut Ranflactic (6½” x 50). If you’ll recall, I’ve bitched about this before, that this size is mis-labeled on a ton of retailers websites as 5.5 x 50 b(including the site I linked to, don’t get me started on the lack of a Room 101 cigar website or an easy way to find it on Davidoff/Camacho’s sites), when it’s the Room 101 Ranfla size renamed to fit the astronaut theme of the brand. It blows my mind that this hasn’t been fixed, but I suppose in the grand scheme of things, it’s really not that big a deal. It just seems to stand out to me and I don’t often see mistakes like this. This particular cigar came from a Davidoff trade show sampler from last year’s show, which has some Avos, some Camachos and some BG Meyers. I have more that I purchased that come in the paper sleeve much like the original Room 101 OSOK. I was really blown away by the first one of these I smoked, and I continue to be a fan. The perfecto shaped cigar has a nice woody, toasty flavor and a great burn. I don’t know how available these are as they only made 3500 boxes of twenty and released them last year, but, considering they are rather pricey, they may still be around.

 

JoyadeNicaragua_CuatroCincoReservaEspecial_TorpedoYesterday I managed to install two ceiling fans with a minimum of profanities, which is something for me. After dinner I sat down with a Joya de Nicaragua Cuatro Cinco Reserva Especial Torpedo. Joya de Nicaragua came out with the original Cuatro Cinco in 2013 to celebrate 45 years of operations in Nicaragua. The following year they came out with this tweaked blend, the Reserva Especial. Oddly, this isn’t a Nicaraguan puro, it has a Dominican binder, but the rest is Nicaraguan with a Nicaraguan Habano wrapper and Nicaraguan filers. I felt like the original Edition Limitada Cuatro Cinco release was a fantastic cigar, I saw it as a refined version of the Antaño Dark Corojo, which is a favorite. This Reserva Especial seems to be missing something that the original limitada had. Here’s the dangerous thing with comparing cigars: The Reserva Especial is a great smoke, it’s got wonderful construction, great flavors, and I would absolutely love it if I wasn’t comparing it to the original. This is just me, and I’m sure there are people who see the Reserva as an improvement, which makes another point, everyone has different tastes. Joya remains one of my favorite brands, there are very few cigars in the lineup that I don’t enjoy.
