News: Wooden Indian Tobacco’s 60th Anniversary Supreme Leaf Gran Robusto Now Available

Here’s some Friday news from my friends at the Wooden Indian. I’ve only been patronizing the Wooden Indian for 14 or so of the 60 years they’ve been around. It’s one of my favorite local shops, the selection is amazing and the staff is second to none.  I’m looking forward to trying this anniversary cigar, I can’t remember if the Supreme Leaf is one of the ones I like or not, but chances are excellent that it’s a really good cigar. I celebrated a 60th anniversary myself last year, this was a year too late!

AGANORSA Leaf Unveils Supreme Leaf Gran Robusto Exclusively for Wooden Indian Tobacco‘s 60th Anniversary.

AGANORSA Leaf, is proud to announce the release of its latest addition to the Supreme Leaf line – the Gran Robusto.  Measuring 5” x 56, this exclusive vitola commemorates the 60th anniversary of Wooden Indian Tobacco, a milestone for the Havertown, PA brick-and-mortar.

The Supreme Leaf Gran Robusto is a Nicaraguan puro blend that has become iconic to the Aganorsa portfolio since the line’s debut in 2020. Unlike its predecessors, the Gran Robusto features a 56 ring gauge, providing a unique and bold smoking profile.

Supreme Leaf Gran Robusto has a limited production of only 500 boxes of 10 cigars with an MSRP of $125. This particular vitola will be available solely through Wooden Indian Tobacco, solidifying the partnership between AGANORSA Leaf, Wooden Indian Tobacco, and Privada Cigar Club who collaborated with Aganorsa on the design and creation of the original Supreme Leaf.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with Wooden Indian Tobacco and Privada Cigar Club for this special occasion,” said Terence Reilly, VP of Sales at AGANORSA Leaf. “The Supreme Leaf Gran Robusto represents a celebration of our leaf and dedication to quality, and we believe it is a fitting tribute to Wooden Indian Tobacco’s 60 years of excellence in this industry.”

The AGANORSA Leaf Supreme Leaf Gran Robusto will be available exclusively at Wooden Indian Tobacco in Havertown, PA through their brick and mortar location and online retail site.

CigarCraig.com Tenth Anniversary Contest

Since last week marked the tenth anniversary of the launch of CigarCraig.com, I figured it would be appropriate to mark the occasion by giving away some cigars from some of the supporters who have helped me along in the journey over the last few years. But before we get to that, here’s a little bit of the CigarCraig.com backstory for those who don’t know it.  In 1996 I developed a passion for premium cigars and ran across a usenet group that talked about such things, alt.smokers.cigars. By 2006 I had grown weary of participating in that group, and the WWW had grown to more advanced avenues of discourse such as websites and forums and such. I never really got into forums, but in 2009, sensing my need to have an outlet to drone on about cigars, my wife set me up with the CigarCraig.com domain for my 46th birthday, and the rest is history. Now, ten years later, I still drown on about cigars, and, oddly, people read my droning. I’ve attended many IPCPR shows, a bunch of large and small events, and made a great many wonderful friends who I wouldn’t have met otherwise. My thanks goes to you, my readers, those who chose to waste your valuable time reading my nonsense!

So, I’ll have another giveaway! I’ve assembled an assortment of cigars from my humidor representing some of my cigar advertisers. I might decide on two winners, in which case I’ll split up the cigars equitably and both winners will get an equally cool assortment!

Pictured is an idea of the cigars that will be included, more might be added! I’ll update on Sunday! So leave a comment on this post to enter! Usual rules apply, legal age, one entry per, yada, yada. I’ll select a winner, or winners, next Wednesday (right before leaving for Miami!)  Thanks to everyone who’s supported CigarCraig.com over the last 10 years!

That’s all for today,

CigarCraig

A Cuenca 5, A Nording 50, My Father Event at Cigar Cigars and a Fuente Don Carlos

Cuenca_5AnniversaryIt seems my palate is back in order, I’m no longer getting that metallic taste from every cigar any more. I’m glad that’s over. The last time I had a similar experience was after I had a flu shot, subsequently I’ve never gotten another flu shot! So to celebrate I smoked some great cigars this week.  In all honesty, I like smoking great cigars much more than I like smoking crappy cigars. I have a few in the que that I’ve been putting off smoking because I haven’t been in the mood to “take one for the team” lately. Maybe I’ll smoke one today as I’m feeding branches into the wood chipper.  The first cigar on my list today is the Cuenca 5 Anniversary box pressed torpedo. This cigar commemorates the fifth anniversary of the Cuenca Cigars store in Hollywood, FL, and came in three sizes, Robusto, Toro and this 7″ x 54 torpedo. These were released in 2013, so this one had 2 years of age, and looking at the CuencaCigars.com website, they appear to be sold out of all vitolas. Made by at the AJ Fernandez factory, this cigar had a great burn and draw and was full of flavor and was really enjoyable. The high priming Jalapa wrapper leaf gave it a nice sweetness that went along with a nice little spice. I really look forward to seeing what the folks at Cuenca come up with in a couple years when they turn ten!

Nording_50th_ToroNext up I came across a Nording 50th Anniversary Toro from Rocky Patel. Somehow I ended up with quite a selection of various Rocky Patel cigars, mostly toros, and I can’t for the life of me recall where they came from. I suppose my only recourse is to smoke them. So this cigar had a beautiful Ecuador Habano wrapper with Nicaraguan binder and fillers. It was a very pleasant, well balanced cigar that I enjoyed quite a bit. I may have had something else from the Nording line in the past, and I think I remember enjoying it. I’m certainly not a pipe  guy, way too much work in that hobby, but I know that this line is named for Erik Nording, a famed pipe maker and tobacco blender, and this cigar was for his 50th year in the tobacco business. It’s a fitting tribute as it was a very good cigar.

imageFriday evening we stopped in at our local Cigar Cigars shop, about 2 miles down the road. They were having a My Father event, and Tom, our local rep, was there. Cigar Cigars is a South Eastern PA chain of cigar stores that has been buying up cigar stores in the area for the last few years and I think they are up to ten or eleven stores now, from Freehold, NJ to Lancaster, PA. Before we moved I could have driven 7 miles in three different directions and be at a Cigar Cigars shop. I’m now a little farther from two of those shops, but could easily be at either one in fifteen minutes. Anyway, we stopped in and grabbed some of the El Centurion and Flor de Las Antillas cigars and lit up an El imageCenturion Toro. This line was originally issues as a Limited Edition in 2007, which I never had the pleasure of smoking, so I can make no comparison. What I can say is that the current El Centurion (which has a band with a great big “C” on it which must stand for CigarCraig, right?) was a very well behaved cigar. Solidly medium bodied with a nice little spice one would expect from this manufacturer. I enjoyed the crap out of the cigar while my wife and I relaxed in the lounge and took in the ambiance of the store. It was great seeing Tom again, and Steve, Barry and Tia made us feel very welcome and comfortable in the shop.

Fuente_DonCarlos_PresidenteYesterday, after toiling in the yard on a beautiful spring Saturday with temps in the 70s, I picked out an Arturo Fuente Don Carlos Presidente for my evening walk.  This came from a business associate who sent me some great Fuente cigars a few months ago.  I think the last time I smoked one of these was shortly after they expanded the line back in the late 90s. It seems to me they added the Presidente, Double Robusto and the No.4 to the Robusto, No. 3 and No 2 sizes to round out the line.  I have fond memories of smoking the robustos in Vegas in ’97, but I think it was a dinner at the old Sam Adams Brewpub in Philadelphia where I smoked this particular size while meeting a friend for dinner, then running into some other friends and smoking the evening away with them.  Impressively, this Don Carlos tasted just the same as I remember. It’s amazing that they can maintain consistency like that over a fifteen year period. The burn was absolutely perfect, it had a nice flat coal like I enjoy and the draw was perfect as well. I love the unique sweetness that that Cameroon wrapper gives this cigar, and it had Camerooniness like crazy. This is a classic cigar, one that every humidor should have for just that moment when you want something you know is going to deliver. That is, assuming the flavor profile of the Fuente Don Carlos is up your alley, if you don’t like it, then it doesn’t need to be in your humidor! Point is, I like it, it tastes great and brings back a lot of memories.

That’s it for today, I need to get out to the yard and finish cleaning some stuff up. My back doesn’t want to, but it needs to get done. I may have to get the lawn mower out this week! I may post a contest this week too, so stay tuned. Thank you all, once again for reading along, enjoy your day. Until the next time,

CigarCraig

Wednesday Cigar Post: a Pre-Release Sample, a Custom Cuban? and a Contest!

For my usual Tuesday night walk last night I selected a re-release sample that Victor Vitale had sent me a few weeks ago, labeled Pre-release L.E. 2012. I must assume that this cigar fits into the Tortuga line, which is cool because I’ve really enjoyed the other cigars I’ve smoked in the line, especially the 1950 Maduro. This particular robusto was very tasty and had a perfect draw. Victor is producing very nice cigars lately. I know I didn’t quite “get” the ORTSAC line (the San Andreas is tasty), but the Tortugas really hit the spot for me, and the L.E. 2012 will be one to keep an eye out for!

Today officially marks the 3rd anniversary of CigarCraig.com. My wife gave me the domain for my 46th birthday, so do the math and draw your own conclusions! What began as an idea for a website with a blog has morphed into a blog with far more readers than I ever anticipated. Thanks to everyone who chooses to waste their valuable time reading along! I’m truly humbled. Anyway, in honor of this auspicious occasion, I selected a special cigar from the humidor, a Taboada custom rolled cigar that was a recent gift from my friend George who I had the pleasure of hanging out with in Orlando. I really wanted to smoke this when he gave it to me, and I know he did too, but I had such a bad cold I knew it wouldn’t taste right. This cigar was rolled by retired Cuban roller Rodolfo Taboada Campa, and is a 6½” x 52ish toro with a shaggy, unfinished foot. The cigar lit easily and burned perfectly.  I understand that Taboada uses the entubado method of rolling, hence the perfect draw from start to finish.  I found myself a little perplexed by the flavor.  It was exceptional, don’t get me wrong, I was just expecting a more Cuban experience.  I didn’t perceive any of what I normally expect in Cuban tobacco, it lacked that “twang”, but it was smooth and loaded with flavor. Maybe it was a blend, I don’t know. (*Note – a very reliable source tells me that these are 100% finest Cuban tobacco rolled in Havana by the master.  My only conclusion is that the tobacco must be processed much better than regular production to produce such smooth and wonderful flavor!)     It was the ideal cigar to celebrate the anniversary of my birth, as well as that of CigarCraig.com. Thank you George! I am sorry I didn’t smoke this with you, but I appreciate the special gift.

In honor of the occasion, why not give away a handful of cigars to some lucky reader? I can scrounge up a Tortuga L.E. 2011, maybe a couple of La Gloria Cubana Artesanos de Tabaqueros, and perhaps some goodies that haven’t even hit the shelves yet. It’s hard to say what might fall into the baggie, but there will be at least six outstanding smokes. Leave a comment to enter and I’ll pick a winner on Sunday.  Usual rules apply.

That’s it for now, until the next time,

CigarCraig
