Sunday I grabbed an Alec Bradley American Classic Blend Gordo for an afternoon walk. I picked up a handful of these reasonably priced and very tasty 6 x 60 cigars at the Cigars International Super Store in Bethlehem, PA when Alan Rubin was there for an event. It’s a nice, fairly mild Ecuador Connecticut shade wrapped cigar that burns well and has loads of flavor. It’s the kind of cigar that one can smoke any time of the day and enjoy. I may need to pick up a few more of these to have around. The band and name were a good fit for the holiday weekend.
Monday was Memorial Day, a day to remember all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice so that we have the freedom to enjoy such a simple pleasure as a cigar. I selected an American Eagles robusto for an afternoon smoke. This cigar has a unique camo pattern applied to a Habano wrapper. It’s a buttery smooth, delicious cigar and you can taste the occasional hint of the candela, maduro and Connecticut shade patchwork every now and then. It’s a pricey cigar, but a portion of the proceeds go to the Semper Fi Fund, not that you can write off the purchase as a charitable donation. It’s a great smoke that should not be dismissed because it looks funny, but good luck finding it if you drop it in the grass!
Monday evening’s cigar was a Grimalkin Toro that I had picked up when I visited Classic Cigar Parlor in Doylestown, PA. a few weeks ago. Grimalkin was one of my favorite cigar finds of last year, and is a wonderful smoke. It’s complex and nuanced, but pairing it with a very spicy Goya Ginger Beer was a bit of a mistake. The ginger spice made the cold ginger beer almost seem not cold enough. If you’re not expecting it, the spice hits you in the back of the throat and can cause a bit of a coughing fit. It would be much better with a heavier cigar, but I still love the Grimalkin, and will miss the cat eyes when this cigar is re-branded to La Musa in the coming months. I’ve enjoyed everything from the Emilio family of cigars, and Gary Griffith has the Midas touch when it comes to tobacco.
The last couple evenings I decided to take some time off from smoking cigars I wanted to really pay attention to, and selected a Macanudo 1968 Robusto on Tuesday, and a Gurkha Seduction Robusto tonight. These are two cigars I really enjoy from time to time, and have featured here in the past. The 1968s came back with my from my trip to the Dominican Republic, so they bring back fond memories. The Gurkha is an especially nice smoke, well made and delicious.
I’d like to offer my congratulations to Charlie Greenbacker of StogieReview.com and his wife on the arrival of their first child, a son, born today. My friend, your life has changed in ways you can’t even imagine! Enjoy the journey and feel secure in the fact that your cigars will now have more of a chance to age!
